Vermont registration
« on: April 04, 2019, 09:18:04 PM »
Has anyone done this recently? It appears I need a police VIN check on official paperwork in my home state (IL) before sending the papers off to Vermont. When I bought it with no papers I checked online and  the numbers aren't in the IDOT system so it should be clean. The newest reference I find is a couple years old.

I bought a 1977 CB750F with no paperwork, (lost title) however I had the local police come by and fill out a VIN verification (FL), i send it all to Vermont, last state the bike was registered (1986). I got a plate and was told there is a waiting period of 60 days to get the title - haven't got the title yet, however the took my money and transferred it somehow into my name and issued a plate - so i guess i'll just wait and see -  if no title in a couple of weeks i'll call back, before i start spending money on a restoration job.
this was early March this year.

Don, I called my local Jesse White office to ask about one. The nice lady went and looked in their book which I guess lists Vermont's rules on titles. Some get them and some don't. She quoted me a cc size limit. Have you called Jesse white's office? What did they tell you?

Vermont does not issue titles on bikes over 15 years old. You will get a plate and registration. I took that along with my state paperwork to my local DMV and came out with my title.

I've read not to ask permission from Illinois. I only want the Vermont registration, then Illinois has to recognize another states laws.  VT has different rules for 450 and down, but it applies to newer bikes. The older posts don't refer to the VIN check in your home state. The other issue is NADA values, Vermont wants tax paid as NADA suggests. My claim will be poor condition and N/A price. I'll offer the 6% tax on the $1000 I paid for it.
I'm not finding anything on getting a vin check in Illinois, it's clean on the Idot web site but VT wants something in writing on a letterhead. A friend did the cop check in Il. once, I'll ask him.
On the outside chance the vin has an issue I'll make sure it's in "as purchased" condition before getting the check. It must be roadworthy not original.

I did not need something on a letter head from the police. There was a spot on the VT paperwork for the policeman to check a box it was clear and then sign it.

I'm ready for a VIN inspection, What did you put down for NADA value? It was suggested I pay 6% of nada good value, which is $3300 that gets me up to nearly $200 tax. The actual purchase price was $1000 but she's pretty rough as is I'd call it poor condition.  Of course! I'll do it if I have to, but obviously I'd prefer the $60 tax.  The tax on fair condition is $115.20 maybe I'll try that.

There was a phone number to VT which I called they told me the value. You can put a value down and if they except it you are good.

Thanks, I may pick the one that's twice what I paid and hope Illinois doesn't hammer me again later.
My buddy had to get a VIN check on his kawi, the cop came and did the VIN and on the way out gave him a ticket for his 86 Buick regal race car sitting on a trailer in his back yard. No plate on it, must be junk.

I guess I procrastinated a while (April of last year)  but this afternoon I got the call from Vermont and my plate/registration is in the mail. I did pay for a value higher than they needed and will issue the refund in a week or two.  I think I paid tax on $2300 and she said the $1600 value was enough.

The local Police public relations officer was a great help but the last thing he asked was, do you have a title for this bike?  I told him if I could get the Vermont reg. I could find it a home and only the information he asked for after that.
I think I could do the same in Georgia by selling it to my niece but I'd have to take it there for an inspection.

7 days later and still no plate but they did cash the check.

Edit. Actually a week since she said it would go out today and 5 weeks since we wrote the check but as long as it comes that's all I need.

Yah, it takes a bit Don. If they cashed the check you are good to go. Can't recall how soon I got mine, but I had forgotten about it and suddenly it was there.

He didn't ask why Vermont, so I didn't answer. L0L!

As a plumber getting lot's of inspections, I learned with people of authority minimize your contact and don't talk about legal matters, talk about fun stuff that they like.  Hunting property, someone's new hot rod, etc. why didn't the state spend that extra license money to give him a raise? If one state inspector became a problem, I'd walk him past the trash area so he could do some re-cycling.  It saved me calling his boss and reversing his incorrect code interpretations.

I got a refund of my overpaid NADA amount and a Vermont license plate today. I would recommend calling the nice lady before sending in too much money. There's no way Illinois would ever refund an overpay. I didn't get a sticker or registration yet, just a copy of my application for registration.
They opened my application two weeks ago, and I mailed it a month ago.  With the post office under stress and covid protocols, I guess that's not so bad.

We got the cop check, Oct 16 thru 19th, I wrote the check and mailed it on Oct 19  The Vt. lady called early Nov. to say I overpaid and the plate would mail that day. It didn't, the check cashed Nov. 16  and I got the refund for overpaying with the plate late Nov. and it was done Dec 5th.  What's that, about  6 weeks?  Cost about $165 all told.
According to the papers I did need something from the police with department letterhead that told who did the  VIN check. You might get by without it, that's what took from Fri. to Mon, also the old serial number wasn't 17 digits so the modern computer lookup system didn't work for them. The officer said the number doesn't have to come up in the system as being registered before, as long as it isn't reported stolen I would be good to go.
