1975 CB750F with strange slipping problem.
« on: December 14, 2020, 01:35:48 AM »
So it just recently started my bike has been sitting for a couple months for the corona.
I took her out today and she is slipping in 2nd gear for like a quick 1 sec and then it back in gear. The clutch is adjusted properly and it's not popping out of gear or phantom neutral. It in gear but feels like clutch slip during a hard pull. Is this a clutching plate issue like worn pressure plates?
Changed the clutch with new clutch plates 6000 miles ago and Barnett springs.

Also after pulling the clutch plates to examine of course I broke the second time the clutch lifter plate. Looking for spares anyone hit me up, need parts.

Thanks- Kap.

Was it doing it in 3rd through 5th gears also ? 2nd gear can be the problem child when it comes to worn shift dawgs. Sounds like it never showed those symptoms before you parked it for a couple months ?

Most likely you put oil with friction modifiers in. What oil do you have in the bike?

Good-bits.co.uk make a new upgraded lifter plate, not sure how much to US. They do just the plate or a kit with bearing and gasket

Honestly I didn't notice since I didn't try to hard after it was happening like 5x times in 2nd gear after riding for 6 miles. It was stop and go LA traffic and just wanted to get it home to make sure nothing explodes in the gear case. I decided to open up the clutch basket and see if anything was loose or out of place. Didn't notice any issues except for me breaking the clutch lifter plate.
So I'm waiting for the back up part and won't be riding until then. Months I'm guessing.

The steel plate you're holding in the first pic looks like it's seen a lot of slippage (burnished ring on the face) and has an almost polished look to it (overall finish appears very bright, could just be the lighting).  If you don't find any other issues you might consider roughing them up or just replacing them.

So sand paper these rings and put them back in.

The sprockets look fine. The teeth aren't even warn down or loose.

If you have a blasting cabinet you might get better results

No blasting cabinet just sand paper and elbow grease.

So I just pulled apart my clutch plates and housing and noticed a few parts that might be worn out. The clutch plate back housing has a 1/10th of a lip. Should I grind down this lip or just leave it alone?

How many metal plates? How many fiber plates? Do you have 2 different types of fiber plates as witnessed by the ears? What order were the plates assembled in?

I have 7 clutch plates and 6 friction plates.
The outer ear looks different. Here is a picture. I have all the friction plates stacked one direction. According to the way I pulled it apart about 4 years ago. I believe it had the original clutch plates at purchased. She has 26k miles now.
My new concerns is the housing with lip. It appears it shouldn't have one. I believe its worn down because of age.
