Dented muffler 78 cb550k
« on: January 22, 2021, 05:22:54 PM »
Hello,
My muffler is dented and i was wondering if there is a way to repair it? If not, do you think muffler shields would work in hiding the dents

Those are serious dents and probably not removeable without surgery. Are they the originals? Or could they be swapped to the other side where they would be flipped over and the dents hidden. That way you may get away with merely rewelding the mounting brackets.

These are the original mufflers. Lol hell even the oil is the original oil. Im a little over my head when it comes to motorcycles or mechanics in general lol i can do basics , so getting this bike going is happening at a snails pace.

Ok, if they are not rusty, and they appear not, a panelbeater should be able to cut out the damaged section, hammer out the dents and then weld it back in, or make a new patch. If it's a regular shape that should be reasonably straightforward. Then it's a case of finding someone to rechrome a used exhaust pipe, most places won't do it because it contaminates the solution(s). Some will if they are confident they can successfully bung the holes.

Some shops will run a small batch when it is time to drain and refresh the tanks with new solutions. It is the last things they do with those plating solutions. Otherwise, you are correct, most won't consider going near them. Also, they require you to flush them and get everything you can out of them as far as any loose carbon. If there is any rust in them, don't bother replating them. Anything rattling around most shops it is a strong no way. They definitely won't give you any kind of warranty on plating work on a used exhaust.

That pipe will work fine just the way it is. Focus on the important issues and spend your money elsewhere. Get the bike running smoothly and clean up the existing pups. In the mean time, keep an eye on EBay and Kijiji. The ‘77/78 pipes do come up as single. If you spot that one, grab it!

This. And scour some junkyards if you can. The later 550 exhausts aren't as hard to find as the earlier, in my experience.
