When you find one of those steering wheel ball things from a tractor on the wheel of your car. I was in the right lane yesterday and happened to notice the guy that came by in the left lane (only to pour on the brakes because there was a car in the left lane that had not come back over after passing me) had one of these and was actually using it while navigating down a mountain pass with twisties.

I know I'm getting old by the way I did not tell anyone the asinine way that the stupidest man I know returned my truck.

(I loaned it to him so some stupid remains with me, I know.)

A younger me would have sent pictures and comments to many mutual acquaintances.

AND I'm not drinking alcohol, I must be getting close to the end.   ;)

I tell my wife the motorcycles are an investment...

Back in the 40's through about late 60's those were on a lot of cars (no power steering on most cars until the late 60's early 70's).
Called them "Brodie Knobs" (check Wikipedia definition).  They did/do work pretty well for one-hand driving BTW.  Also (according to Wiki) they are not illegal in most States.
Oh..forgot to add: Used to say that we "Spun some Brodies' after spinning what are called 'Doughnuts" today LOL
This is a sign that you're really getting old..by remembering this stuff..I think LOL

Naw, a "Brodie" is not the same as a "Doughnut". A Brodie is to slide to a stop at 90 to 180 degrees from the direction of travel, while a Doughnut is to spin 360 degrees or more. You can do a Brodie on a bicycle, but you can't do Doughnuts on a bicycle. ;D

Maybe you're right Scott LOL

Remember..this was a long time ago..that I'm remembering some of this stuff (another sign of 'getting older' I guess LOL).
Guess the analogy to this today..would be the 'drifting' that some drivers have perfected with their driving skills.  All beyond me nowadays. I'm just happy to hop on my SOHC4 in good weather..ride some paved back-roads for a few miles and feel it's all good.
Still..not going to cop to the idea that I'm getting too old..not just yet.  Looking forward to riding with friends again..after this stupid Covid thing becomes less restrictive/problematic.

I did some election judge work at my union hall today and a guy from my apprenticeship class (also retired) mentioned how many of our classmates are dead already.

Well crap Don! I too noticed that several months ago. I get a quarterly mag from our international and the recent member deaths are posted in the back. I’m seeing people passed away who were in the trade when I got in and there’s maybe 10+ years separating us. I suppose I’ll sit in the most comfortable chair while in the green room.
BTW- late in 2019 I too got involved in the apprentice application process. Personal interviews were my assignment. Myself (retired union member) and a company rep were the last ones any apprentice saw after all the test taking. I was dumbfounded how many young guys who want to work just couldn’t pay attention or understand the questions we asked.

But on a different note, and speaking of getting older, and how we know it, recently my wife and I have been watching old movies from like the mid thirties up into the 40’s and fifties. . We call out those names either on the credits or during the show of those we recognize from that era. Grace Kelly, Leo G. Carroll (remember the “Topper” series?) early EdwardG. Robinson, Guy Williams etc.
I feel old because my dad used to do that too.

Hey Mike.  What with all the Covid/pandemic crap over the past year..we've been watching a lot of programs/old movies on the INSP/Westerns channel on TV.  Same era as you mentioned..late 30's up through the late 70's mainly.  And yes..I've been able to name a lot of the actors in those programs [my wife's Japanese..so doesn't remember most of it..plus years younger than me].

Seemed kinda weird to me at first to see/remember all those actors/names..but have come to enjoy seeing/remembering them now.
In a lot of ways..I think those times were simpler..definitely more straight forward in an ethical sense. Also perhaps not so bad if we were to apply some of those ethics in today's world..I believe.
Cheers..Ichi

I liked those old films in the 70's when they were just getting old. Now the 70's movies that were my favorites are getting old and I've had some time to look them over again....Like the French Connection , a fantastic car chase happened in that film and it was the rage then, now I see it and realize Popeye Doyle couldn't drive a car to save his ass. Then there's Jaws, does anyone know what happened to to chair mounted on the back of the Orca? If it was still there the captian wouldn't have been eaten from the back of the boat. And  Bullet, what a great car chase , but as you watch the dents appear and disappear on that mustang because it was filmed or edited at different sequences than the dents happened...well but who doesn't love beating the hell out of muscle cars on film.
We recently got Britbox, not so much action with cars and stuff blowing up but I find it interesting that even the criminals have ethics for the most part. They get caught and know they're caught and allow arrest, not blow up the entire downtown parking garage or highrise. It seems that every American criminal in US movies has enough connections and funds to to buy military grade munitions, helicopters, tanks and classic hot rods to do with all and there's always a set of legs or two that know kungfu , karate and 4 other Chinese words that they are willing to unleash on any unsuspecting $5 an hour security guard and usually have other skills that rival the green beret. Sometimes too much can be too much and Britbox I find gives me a little more sanity and realism when times seem unreal already.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

I kinda miss beating the tar out of my muscle cars. Had 2 of them, a 1963 (pre-smog controls!) Galaxie convertible with the 390X FE (solid lifters, long-duration cam, 750 CFM 4-bbl, aka "Police Interceptor Special" package, rated then 375 HP), hard to keep tires on that one. Also bought a new El Camino in 1972, via the Chevy Perfromance Shop in Detroit, back when you could order what you wanted from the factory and just had to pay for it: the base El Camino was $1850, this one came to me at $4340 and took 3 months to get: 402 big block, cowl inducted 760 CFM quad, spoked lightweight wheels, Muncie 4-speed, 1100-lb clutch (argh...) buckets (but I did add A/C...), and posi with adjustable rear suspension, SS kit with 'stripes' on the horizontal surfaces (which came off in chunks 3 months later). Sadly, this one could pass anyting but a gas station (4-5 MPG city, 12 MPG hiway) and turned out to be the biggest, most unreliable POS I ever owned: 37k miles and 13 months later I parked it in a public place with "For Sale" on it (because the warranty was over) and sold it to the first guy who handed me cash for it (the next day). It spent as much time in the Chevy shop as I spent driving it.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

I was dumbfounded how many young guys who want to work just couldn’t pay attention or understand the questions we asked.

I recently helped a 40+ year old friend of my kids get into the plumbing trade, he asked for ideas and followed everything I suggested. Once he got in he excelled at classes and when he got laid off went to the school for extra classes. He was amazed that they would teach him to weld for free. While he was there a call came in for an apprentice hvac job. They had no one in line for it and the business manager said Nick's right out in the shop go ask him, he happily took it and found out later he was replacing an apprentice that didn't like to work or have any respect for his journeymen.
It's nice to know there are guys that appreciate a helping hand.
