What tank liner should i use? (10% ethanol)
« on: September 26, 2021, 11:28:11 AM »
Ive came across a MuscleMachine kit. But as many of you know, the glassfiber its made of dont like the ethanol in todays gas. I basically could buy two 2 Liter non-ethanol jugs from the hardware store and run it with. However since the tank is quite small this wont be a good option, atleast not on longer rides. Are there any good liners out there that work with glassfiber?

I would prefer if i dont have to cut the tank up to apply it.

I had a customer who brought me a beautiful, low mileage original Norton 750 Commando which has a fiberglass tank;inside the tank it looked a little 'hairy' in a couple spots, like possibly some of the original resin was getting degraded. The paint on the outside of the tank was original black with gold lettering and stripes and it was Mint.
I was living on an island at the time and we have many boat repair places.I brought the tank to them after carefully masking off the outside of it and they did a 'Gel Coat' on the inside and it seemed to work well;they do the same thing with their boats with fiberglass fuel tanks.
There may be better options than that but it worked for my customer.

Caswell epoxy liner would be my choice for a fiberglass tank. May wish to download the instructions to see if you need any special prep for the tank given it is fiberglass and not metal.

Caswell is the one to use on fiberglass.

I have used Caswell on two steel tanks and plan to use it on my fibre class Rickman tank. My research suggests this is the most likely to work. Ultimately I may order an alloy “replica” and save the glass tank......

I used Caswell on my lightly used Fibermold fiberglass tank, it had not had gasohol in it ever. I got the large size to maybe do two tanks. I wasn't positive it was covering so I mixed the other half and used it all. I could see it through the bottom of the tank with a good light shining in the top and could get an idea of the coating. If it was warmer in the shop it might have covered with half of it.
I believe it directed me to rinse with acetone first but read it for yourself.  I have only had gas in it once.

I used Caswell.  I was told by them to avoid using fuel stabilizers in it in the winter, so I've been draining the tank for storage.

Jeez, it pays to read these posts even if you think you have nothing to offer.  I have caswell coatings in all of my tanks and had no idea you should avoid stabilizer in the winter.  After seeing this post, I immediately contacted Caswell to confirm and see what else I could be unaware of.  I will say I have not noticed any ill effects yet and it may depend on the brand of stabilizer (I use STA-BIL).  Got some good info from them, waiting on more.  Here’s what they’ve told me so far…

“…Some fuel stabilizers have ingredients that are close to that of paint stripper“

When I asked them about other additives such as seafoam…

“… Sea foam is fine. Stay away from Marvel mystery oil and three in one oil“

I’ll post more info if/when they get back to me.  The last message I sent them was asking for the specific chemical ingredients that may be in fuel stabilizers; waiting on a response.

So…”Methylene chloride and dichlorobenzene are the 2 ingredients to keep away from” your Caswell (and probably most other) tank coatings.  So check those labels.  Good to know.
