'73 CB750 Leaking carb bowl - fix or replace?
« on: December 26, 2020, 08:09:49 PM »
I got a replacement float bowl due to one of mine having a broken drain plug which was buggered.  But the replacement leaks, I filled it up with gas and it drips out steadily.  So I'm 0 for 2.  I sort of doubt there is a way to fix it properly, but if anyone has done this let me know.  It's dripping out of the overflow tube, looks like a press fit brass into aluminum.

Otherwise if anyone has one let me know, I can live with one that's not a #3 as well, just want a non-leaker.  I have quite a few decent parts to offer up as trade or let me know your price.  Thanks!

It's dripping out of the overflow tube, looks like a press fit brass into aluminum.
If it's dripping from the overflow tube, there are two common causes..
1 The float is not performing it's job shutting off the fuel when the bowl is full
2 The brass overflow tube has a split or crack, allowing fuel to seep through. There are several ways to repair split tubes.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I took the bowl off and held over the sink, filled each one up and the one leaks even half filled.  I will try a test tomorrow with a vacuum pump to find out more.

Sounds like a cracked/split overflow tube...

Yeah it is the overflow tube, easy enough to sleeve it for a quick fix.

I soldered it, worked fine and took for a spin today, using a friend's tank that I de-rusted with vinegar for 3 days, then nuts/bolts in hot water with baking soda, then acetone and finally threw some Marvel Mystery oil I had laying around for some reason (snake oil ahem).  Rebuilt his petcock and put a spare fresh gas cap gasket on it and fired it up.  Still rough around the edges but it's getting there.
