« on: December 27, 2020, 03:31:27 PM »
I stripped-out a couple 8x1.25 bolts and I'd rather not do a Timesert so I want to tap them out to 9mm:looking for some standard grade-8, 9x1.25x25mm allen heads if I can find them.I realize they are not 'standard' to most hardware stores, etc.I would like to purchase them locally if possible, just not sure who to call.

You done this before Wilbur ? That size isn't very common but wondered if I have other options like Fastenal, etc. where I can get a grade 10.9 cadmium plated, stainless, etc. I'm going to try Fastenal tomorrow(they're closed today)and see what they say.I've been looking online and haven't scored on it yet. Thanks  :)

Wilbur, the automotive parts you linked look like they're more of internal(like a nut for the clutch bolts to go into?) threads possibly.. ?

I noticed a pair of 9mm stainless bolts on Ebay:they want $14 for 2) bolts plus shipping.

That could be possible, it's just the first thing that I found searching. Sometimes the fiche doesn't do the part justice but you may be right...

Where are you using these bolts, Bill? Can you tap the holes out to 3/8" fine thread? That's about 9.5mm.

If you have a Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Fiat dealer in town maybe see if they have one of the 06509983AA bolts in stock?

Where are you using these bolts, Bill? Can you tap the holes out to 3/8" fine thread? That's about 9.5mm.

a cast aluminum crankcase to hold footpegs on to a small Honda. They started with 8x1.25
Scott,I like the idea of of 3/8" fine thread, what would be equivalent to 1.25:  3/8"-16 ?
9mm are so tough to find here. According to one source 3/8 uses a 5/16 drill, that's the same as my 9mm tap says.

I was told Toyota parts people may know, sometimes they use odd sizes including 9x1.25x20-25mm.
I want steel like Grade 8 bolts w/ an allen head or a 12mm hex head:the original ones are 8x1.25 w/ a 12mm hex head. There isn't much room for any larger head because of how close the footpegs are to where the bolts hold the footpeg bar on.I would get 10mm allen bolts and then turn them down to the correct diameter(if I had a shop with a lathe)then use my 9x1.25 Die and thread them, that's one option.I need to meet someone with a lathe who will turn them down smooth for me.

Sound real close tho 3/8 x 20.. pitch near identical .., you don't want fine threads in aluminium .

Sound real close tho 3/8 x 20.. pitch near identical .., you don't want fine threads in aluminium .

3/8-20 ?  those should be available at the hardware store.I would rather just find some 9mm.. Man those are difficult to source.

Cheap thread repair kit, helicoul style.
I fixed an M8 on a head.
Time sert too expensive for one failure.
Cheap "helicoil" type kit cost not much. Around $30US with 25 coils. These works better than the real thing I have got from my job which did not snap off as needed when coil is mounted.
A sharp pin struggled with the bolt.

+1

I have not had a Heli-coil style repair fail. I have used both Heli-coil brand as well as the Heli-coil clones.

I have a tap and die, both 9 x 1.25mm,now if I could find hex bolt blanks of the correct diameter, I could use the die and custom make my own 9x1.25 bolts. This idea of what IS or ISN'T 'Standard'..  >:(  :that isn't doing too much for my outlook at this point.

3/8-24 is a standard fine thread UNF  Fine threads have better pullout strength than coarse (more threads per inch engagement).  Tap drill for a 3/8-24 figures out to be .333", but I would recommend a 5/16" for better thread engagement percentage.  Standard drill diameter is figured on approximately 70%  I would strongly recommend making threaded studs instead of using bolts.  You can make the studs to fit in the hole as deep as possible and then a nut.  Studs are superior to pullout resistance when torqueing down.  Just make the stud long enough for your application, and use anti-seize compound when assembling.

I know it's not being considered but is there enough material and depth to move to M10x1.25?

I appreciate this information Steve F and will consider these options.I have found some 9x1.25 bolts on Ebay(from China)SS 304 Grade, kind'a soft material..,they want $14 for 2 bolts.I could go with this option..

Hi Alan F,
I did consider that but want to save as much original cast aluminum on my cases as i can,so I want to just go up in size in small increments, one small step at a time.I would rather use 9x1.25 to start with and save as more material for later.

Well,at the risk of offending sohc4 members, these are for a small Honda single which attaches the footpegs to the bottom of the crankcases with 4) 8x1.25 bolts.
I don't want to take out any more material from that critical area than necessary, even if 9x1.25 Is real tough to locate..

Nobody will be offended, many of us have other Hondas, and many have other makes as well.
2 wheels = good.

Ok so just to help here, see if you can get a member to make  some bolts out of hex , or studs out of rod..
They only got to know the length , and even if they cut only 85 % -of thread , you die will finish it easily.
You just need to tell them length and maybe send material.    9/16 hex ought do it.
You any want to  safety wire them..
