New Harley guy to flame
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:56:32 AM »
Hi all, new here and looking for a project.
Just sold my hot rod sportster and bought a bagger, so I'm looking for another little hot rod.
Was going to build a chopper, but that's what all my buddies have. Figured if I show up on our rides with a hot cafe racer everyone will be checking out the non chopper.
So, looking for an older cb750 in the Alberta, Canada area. Found a 74 cb750 with a siezed engine at the bike wreckers for $600cnd.
Is that a good price? He figures it is siezed from sitting and it looks pretty complete.
Thanks
Owen

Not sure what things are like in your area, but in MN I have come across more than a couple that may only be $100 or more than that with running/near running bikes.  Personally I would look around a bit, but that is me, and I am uber cheap...

Oh I am very cheap too! LOL
And the wife is even cheaper. Hard to convince her I need money for another bike when I just spent $20,000 on my bagger!
Thanks

Welcome toys10,

If it were me, I'd look around for a runner too.  I bought my 70 cb750 K0 from a previous co-worker for $75.00 US dollars.  It isn't pretty, but it runs (needs paint and all manner of other things but that's what makes a project).  $600.00 CND seems somewhat pricey for a non-runner, but then again I too, am uber-cheap.  I'd check the usual suspects (craigslist in your area, ebay, your local newspaper, etc.).  Then again, some of the other people here post good buys to make the rest of us informed (or jealous  ;D).

Welcome again, I live in Milwaukee and it's nice to see an appreciation for other motorcycles.  I personally love them all.

Prost!

Welcome toys10.  If it's opinions you seek, then it's opinions you shall have. ;)

I agree with the gents above.  For $600 I'd expect it to be road worthy or almost there.

I would'nt give much at all if its seized.........the engine has to come out to yank the head and who knows what else you will find when you get in there. Alot less work to do right off the top with a free spinning motor. That is a good year and model to go after though. And welcome to the forum!!!!!

Owen,

Keep looking. You should be able to find a bike with a decent motor for $600. If you decide against the cafe give Red Good a call in Regina, SK. He's making big tire soft tail frames for the 750. www.design-cycle.com  or www.cycleonemanufacturing.com. I stopped by his shop this past August while cruising in your area. He's legit! That ride between Calgary and Regina is almost as bad as Kansas but less traffic!

ps - you gotta watch some of these guys - they are Honda snobs but damn good guys and some of them even turn against 78 750K's

Ya, I was there once before when I was going to turn my sporty into a chopper. Wife is from there and said she is riding with me there this summer, so I will check him out.
Thanks

And I'm not worried about the snob thing. I'm a Harley rider remember. Biggest snob group out there!

If they turn against 78 750Ks they are uncouth buffoons.

No flames from here, remember you meet the nicest people on a Honda   :)  A guy at a local hod rod shop asked me what I have.  I told him it's a '77 Honda.  He replied by saying that that's what the badboys ride nowadays... only doctors and such can afford a Harley! Times have changed...

I agree with you on those who would check out the non-chopper.  In a community where V-twins and sportsbikes run around daily, out on the road my cheap cafe 550 does turn heads... maybe it's a WTF is that reaction :P
