#4 - Sunday 5/17

We were supposed to be in Day 3 of an 8-day rain streak. Had a little drizzle in the morning and clear blue skies in the afternoon so I took a little trip...
Little hub & spoke back & forth on a back road section from Helotes to San Jeronimo to Rio Medina to Hondo to Quihi to Rio Medina to Helotes. Beautiful day, very little traffic, and the bike ran great. Only bad thing was the bug guts splattered on my helmet.

Cheers

My new chain came in so I managed to slip in a 105 miler out to Stockbridge for the season opening motorcycle meet. I met Suzi Greenway who is the sponsor of the meets that are held there.  She was showing her GB500 but I read she is the 20 year president of the Norton Owners Club. The All Clubs Day in September is a much bigger event.
Not much Honda riding for me yet, even though the weather is good, and the CB is ready to roll. I’m way too busy at home.

About 120 miles today, so made it to the threshold.  Part of the ride was SH52 between Horseshoe Bend and Emmett.  A beautiful day.

I think I might have already done my 21 x 100(+) milers already, I'll have to check my log books. (we have to keep log books for our 25+ year old "Classic" registration bikes) Only on my K0 and K2, but to be fair, as the weather cools on my side of the pond, it's warming up on yours. I'm riding my K2 to a swap meet on Saturday, followed by a Heathcote pie run. Should be good. My longest SOHC4 ride this year was last month when I did 2 x 200 milers on the Easter weekend. ;D

I did not report my last long weekends 2 rides on my K6. 200 and 295km.
It has done 2500 km since April 4.
Better to report with photos and describe the ride and area.
Bad cold wheather has minimized riding days.

Come by and see us when you do, and I might go with you.  You know where to find us.

Yes to both.  Most of southern Idaho has been covered with numerous lava flows, with terrain shaped by ice age glacial advances and retreats, river course changes, occasional earthquakes, super-volcanic eruptions, and enormous floods, with magnitude of effects not necessarily in that order.  The geological history of the region is interesting.  Check out 'Yellowstone caldera' and 'Bonneville flood" if you are interested in catastrophic events.  The Missoula floods are an interesting subject, too.

Ride #2 130 miles On my usual route: Whitmore Lake, Stockbridge, Waterloo, Chelsea, Dexter, home. I stopped in at Chelsea FD and saw this worked over 2007 Impala. Which is too bad as we also have an 07 Impala at home in the driveway. It’s a teenager now with 175000 miles on the odo. Ours is utterly reliable and delivers better that 30mpg on the highway. That makes for a 500 mile range. So I’m looking at the wrecked car and thinking if there is anything worth salvaging, but no, ours doesn’t need a thing. The CB is also running and rolling very well.

Yes, we are in midsummer temps and it’s only May. Good thing I got out early yesterday.
I have to keep Gilmore on the radar: June 12ride-13show, swap meet both days. I like nothing better than the group rides, surrounded by a field of vintage motorcycles, all running and ready for riding in the west Michigan countryside.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of good asphalt I encountered yesterday and the lack of construction barrels  on the route. It’s still early in the orange barrel season and funding is holding back road projects, I believe.

In some other existence I’d have a Star Trek transporter so I could move me and my CB across continents and oceans to tag along with you all on your favorite rides. In the meantime, I’ll keep an eye on the travel threads and try to share the best of what’s here. 😎

....And I’m pretty sure Terry has locked up the First In🥇award🏆....And done it well, all on CB750s finishing at Prendergast Drive. I only managed it last year because he was locked down near completion.

That's a fine idea, the RTW crowd would really be snobs to us 'day-trippers' though....

'Round-the-world' type adventure riders. I'm sure some snobbery would ensue if we could beam out to the middle of nowhere and ride some cool places...when they're just cooler for riding there the long way.

How about a toll booth style jump gate? Ride in at 5mph and roll out at your destination landing gate?

.......
Is that warm weather?
The temperatures here are colder than normal and many years back.

The last years springs here in Sweden colder than 1979-1990 when I remember most years when I rode my bike back then.

This make me to recall the scientists theories in the 70's-80's about a little ice age coming.

....And I’m pretty sure Terry has locked up the First In🥇award🏆....And done it well, all on CB750s finishing at Prendergast Drive. I only managed it last year because he was locked down near completion.

Thanks Kevin, I've been very lucky this year that (unlike 2020) I have not just one running CB750 to ride (like Frank, my K2 was out of action all year after the gearbox locked up on New years Eve 2019) but now that I've built the K0 from scratch and rebuilt another K2 engine into a mild 836 with an Andrews A grind cam, better brakes etc, it's an absolute luxury to have two good running CB750's to choose from for my weekend rides.

I just did some math, including yesterdays 165 mile ride (first into the city with Spotty to a swap meet, then to Heathcote for a delicious pie) the total mileage of both CB750's this year is 3170 miles. (5072 Km) It's interesting that I've done 13 rides on the K0 and 14 on the K2, for a total of 27 so far, but I have to say that at least one K0 ride was less than 100 miles, and at least two on the K2 were less than 100 due to some "breaking in" issues on both bikes, so I'm gonna say I've only done 23 100 milers so far in 2022.

I've taken around a million pics of each bike and if you want to see them take a look at either build thread, but yesterday I tried (and hated) mounting a cheap copy of a Gopro camera on my helmet. I should have realised that it would act like a sail, and so I spent all day forcing my head to look straight ahead and not twisting around to the right due to the position of the camera. I'll make a mount for each bike and mount the camera to the bike next time.

Anyway, yesterday's 165 miler (and I have to admit that Spotty rode my K2 for 15 miles (which was hilarious to watch, Spotty is around 7 feet tall and over 300 pounds (and not fat) so he looked like that cartoon bear riding the tricycle at the circus on my 750, but I loved riding his Yamaha VMax, what an absolute beast! I want one........... damnit. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

PeWe, 90f is the threshold for blazing hot around here. It’s unusual that we are having a week of 85-90f at this time in May. I’m not a statistician or a meteorologist but in 2020 we had an inordinate amount of 90f days and if this keeps up we will be well ahead of 2020. I’m not complaining, for the first time in my life there is central AC in my home.
70f +/- is perfect riding temp yes? 90f is Tshirt riding temp and not ATGATT.

Terry, I’d be tempted to turn it loose on Prendergast Lane. It looks like a straight lonesome road with good asphalt.

Thanks Kevin, many years ago before they named that road after my dad, I did a speed trial in my clapped out little Mazda RX2 coupe with my wife (then girlfriend) my cousin and his (then) girlfriend and we wound that little 12A rotary powered go cart up to 130 MPH.

That road is dead straight on very flat ground ( the “Airport” was a WW2 Bomber base) so all the roads around there were good for going fast, apart for cops, cattle and wildlife etc. ;D

Now I know where our good weather has gone ;)
But, this is 60 degrees north as the southern tip of Greenland.
We enjoy 40-54F, happy with no frost nights.

Anyway,  tomatoes and cucumbers we have grown are kept indoor, too cold. Less than +15C (59F) no sunshine not good.

We are having a cool weekend with temps dipping back into high 80s (87f) this weekend and is likely the last time it will be this cool again until September or October....
Was down to 50f this morning (desert gets cold at night) but not usually this cool.  Soon with air temps going to 95+ daytime heat any riding above those temps actually has no cooling effect at all.  Even using cooling vests won’t help much as you actually get warmer, about 5 degrees, riding in temps 95 and above.  Since I won’t ride without AGATT, my riding season ends during the day as we pass that temp. Here 60s in morning you need a bit of extra layer for staying warm enough riding early in the morning but by the time it hits 72 to 75 you don’t need that extra layer. In fact you want to stay moving so the mesh jacket can keep you comfortable.

I am having a neck and shoulder issue or I would be gearing up in an hour for a 35 mile ride to the church I go to...driving today to be able to rest that area as much as possible. Would much rather be on the Vstrom.

Stay safe out there!

70-80F is good riding temp. I prefer fully leathered (protected) with gloves and protective boots.

Well done Terry....no report at all and then   BOOOMMM... !
I will take 80 to 95 temps any day of the year for best riding temperature..  when you stop you may want to remove or open your leather jacket..
The thread is acting  just like our local situation......  not much going on till May Long Weekend (this one) then all hell breaks loose.. summer officialy started... and uts crazy till mid September..

Thanks Frank, and I’m sorry I didn’t see it earlier, but it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to you and Per as you’ve both been following my K0 and K2 build threads that listed all of my rides this year with pics. Rather than swamp this thread with 5 or 6 pages copied from those threads, if anyone is interested, go check out my build threads, I’ll just report my upcoming rides on this one, but only for my CB750’s.

I’ve got some uniform Army work coming up next month and I’ll be travelling to Canberra for a week, so I’m hoping to ride one of my bikes, it’s around 4-500 miles each way (depending on the route that I choose) but I’ll probably ride my Triumph Rocket III as it has bags and a fairing (well, a screen) so might be better on those chilly Canberra mornings where <0 deg C temps are pretty normal.

My leaking fork seal on the K2 Bitsa has returned sadly, which means I need to repair/replace the fork tube on that side before mg next ride. I hate throwing stuff out, and I do have two sets of shiny new fork tubes, so I might have to used one of them if I can’t fill the gouging caused by some numpty in the US (where I bought the front end from) using a pipe wrench to twist the tubes out of the triples. If he’d just committed this heinous act a few inches higher, it wouldn’t be an issue, and I do like that my cast iron front left disc id showing no rust due to a fine coating of ATF that has bypassed thd new seal, but J need to fix it.

I also need to replace the ancient speedo and tach cables, does anyone have a hint for removing the little JIS countersunk screw that retains the cable in the speedo gearbox on the front wheel? I’ve used my JIS screwdrivers with no positive effects, so am now thinking of cutting a slot in the top of the screw and using my impact driver? I don’t want to mess it up as I’m running short of these parts out in the “Tardis” and have several bikes to build? Heat is out (seals) so I need to do it cold, and I dare not drill the head off the screw as there won’t be enough of the screw remaining below to safely remove? It’s a quandry, wrapped up in a enigma...... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
