Ride #17 124 miles 49mpg 74f

I made it out again this today, enjoying the sunshine. The weather has been superb this week but the streak is supposed to come to an end later tomorrow. Anyway, midday Friday rides are much better than Saturday rides, and being retired I can take advantage of that.
I saw more than a few cars in the turnouts at the state lands. It’s October 1st, the bow hunters are out in the woods. I didn’t see any deer in the state lands, where hunting is allowed, but I saw several at home, where hunting is not allowed. The deer are smarter than you think they are.
The harvest is on. There were many combines operating in the fields today: corn, grain, beans, and the trucks hauling it away.
My photo is from Gregory, just outside the volunteer FD. Stockbridge to the right on M36, Hell to the left on the D32.

Well done Kevin, how many miles has the K1 done now, must be getting close to 100K? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Thanks for the encouragement Good, yes I’m on the homestretch now. But it’s not a done deal.
It was 46f early this morning. I made my departure at 11am when it was 62f. I need the weather to be decent for a while longer. A solid season here is April 15 to October 15, maybe a little more. Anything in November is bonus riding.
I think I will make it in, I have had my share of seat time this year under any circumstances.

Terry, no odometer pictures this year! If I finish Frank’s Challenge, I’ll be over 94k. A little longer to reach 100k. If the CB behaves and my health holds.

Yes, it is at 165,716 miles when I got back yesterday.  The farthest the engine has been opened up since it was put together by Soichiro himself was to replace the seals under the cam holders, which was quite a few years ago now.

It is not just the miles that is impressive as there were some 200,000 mile examples around back in the day, but the years too.    It will be 47 years in February since the engine was assembled.

It has a tiny weep that shows up on the fins, mainly on the left side.  It is barely noticeable if I clean the bike every 500 miles or so.  It started after I put Mobil 1 synthetic in it once many years ago.  I ran the Mobil 1 out of curiosity because I got it on sale cheap at Walmart.  The engine started leaking within 1000 miles after putting in the Mobil 1.  I ran that oil for 4000 miles, then went back to the Spectro HD.  After that, the weeping began to subside to the point where it is not really significant enough to worry about now.  As far as oil consumption, it may be using a pint every 2000 miles now.  My oil change interval with the Spectro is 3000 miles these days, which is a little controversial with some people.  But I think the results speak for themselves.

Greg, that’s terrific.
My own story is not quite similar and from a different angle.
One of the miracles of my life is that my own CB has withstood my own ham handed entries into the engine and come back for more miles. Point seals, pucks, cam chain have led me in.
Nobody else has ever turned a wrench on this bike since it left Japan.
Hondaman did my swing arm bushings.
Jim Nicholson did the repaint.
Jerry Ignash did a weld job on a broken chain guard tab.
SOHC4 has coached me plenty TYVM, and I should try the SpectroHD and see if it will help with my recent top end seepage.
I have been a Valvoline user in recent times as it’s readily available and not $10 a quart.
I looked at Google and found the Mountain Home AFB. Is it still active? There were ICBMs? Probably gone?
Singapore AF F15s? USAF F15’s? There was a story about a Thunderbird practice crash/ejection.

ofreen's story of his bike made me to order 12 bottles of Spectro HD oil a few years ago, another (16) 4x4quart bottles this year... More will cover shipping better.
Good to have several changes with filters in stock home.
3000 miles seems OK as long as oil look and feels good when inspect the dipstick.

Singapore AF F15s? USAF F15’s? There was a story about a Thunderbird practice crash/ejection.

The base is still active, its primary mission as a fighter base.  No ICBMs there any more that I am aware of, but there are plenty aimed at it for sure.  It is cool that you have had your bike since its beginning.  Mine was two years old when I got it, primarily being used as a living room accent by the previous owner.  I helped him get it down the steps the day I went to look at it.

ofreen's story of his bike made me to order 12 bottles of Spectro HD oil a few years ago, another (16) 4x4quart bottles this year... More will cover shipping better.

I remember you tried the Spectro HD and liked it.  I hope they never change their formula to something not as good.  As far as I know, they have keep the zinc level up in it.

The zink is one of the important stuff. Finding neutral on hot engine when standing still another one.
I have mixed it with 1/4 Red Line for my K6, making semi synth.... When everything work fine it's nice to enjoy a longer ride.
I look forward to get one or 2 rides more this month before end of season.
I have a new 100 mile route I need to enjoy once more, cheap restaurant ($10US meal) included ;D

Ride 18 - October 3 - 99 miles

Another beautiful day, mid-60's when we left, near 80f when we got home. Partly cloudy, no breeze.

Didn't think we were going to get to ride this weekend. The forecast had been for rain Wednesday through today. Ended up getting a good shower Thursday night and that was it. Headed to our usual breakfast spot in Bandera; lots of bikes out today but otherwise traffic was light. After fueling ourselves up, we headed south on FM 173 to a county road my neighbor had discovered recently. It was perfect, no traffic, nice twists & turns. Stopped for a pic at a stream crossing. Came out on the road that leads back to Rio Medina but we turned off on another county road that headed back north where we encountered the only negative for the day, a teen girl in a huge hurry wouldn't pass and wouldn't get off our butts. Finally pulled over and let her be gone while we got back to our quiet ride. Stopped for another break near the lake and then headed to the house.

Cheers!

Ride 19 - October 9 - 85 miles

Clear blue skies, mid-70's, slight breeze

Neighbor told me it was National Motorcycle Ride Day so, of course, we had to go out. Went out my the lake and explored a couple of new county roads. Stopped for breakfast in Castroville and then made our way out to Quihi, then north to the lake and dam. Stopped at the watering hole at Dancing Bear but we were too early for an adult beverage. Wandered around a little and then back home before traffic got heavy.

Cheers!

I know that any ride under 100 miles doesn't count on this thread, but I was just happy to ride a CB750 today, for maybe 5 miles? I've been waiting 2.5 months for my new Stinko rear tyre to arrive (Stinko tyres supply in Oz is a problem right now) but today I finally had them fitted to my Auto's Comstar's, and I rode it, and it was good. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks David, it's an odd thing to ride, but it goes really well and being a US import (as opposed to an Aussie market bike from back in the day) it hasn't been flogged to death, so it feels nice and tight, and if I closed my eyes I could imagine myself riding it in 1978, in my blue disco boots and flares. Luckily I don't ride with my eyes closed, unless I'm really tired....... ;D

Ride 18 166 miles 47.5 mpg

Finally caught a break today on the weather, it’s been rainy. 10 days off was not on my agenda.
I wanted to go a little further today so I started on the M14 @ 70mph to Ann Arbor - not the greatest but what followed was terrific: Huron River Drive from Ann Arbor, Dexter-Chelsea rd, Cavanaugh Lake rd, Clear Lake rd, Seymour rd into Jackson. Hardly a car on the road today makes it even nicer.
Photo at the old state prison in Jackson on Cooper street:

This facility isn’t in prison use anymore. The current big house is out of town, a couple miles up Cooper street on the other side of I-94.
After leaving Jackson I treated myself to a booster dose of Seymour road and then on up to the D32 for a drive through Hell. You ought to know that Hell is pretty quiet on a Monday afternoon, and it’s not too far from the big house on Cooper street.
I wandered up a little dirt track towards the boat launch on Gosling lake. Nobody no nothing there. I parked my CB in the lane and snapped a nice photo. Fall colors just beginning here.
The Honda never made it to reserve at 166 miles and 3.47 gallons to refill. I couldn’t tell you the last time I went on reserve but it must have been pretty close today.

Terry, that is a nice looking 750A, and that ride counts for plenty. You get the wind in your face, You get the roar in your ear. That’s worth something!

Though I've been riding an F all these years, the photo of your bike on the dirt road reminds me of what drew me to the CB750 so many years ago.
