new primary chain?
« on: February 21, 2007, 10:57:30 PM »
I'm in the middle of my engine rebuild.  Cases are split, but just before I did that, I measured the tensioner distance with respect to the case like it's described in the manual.  I measured 68mm.  Manual says replace if >70mm.

My question is, what is the measurement on a brand new chain?  That is, if a brand new chain measures 66mm, then I'd suppose I have another 50k mi left on this one.

Should I replace it now since I have the case split?

If its in bits why not fit new unless you are relly cash poor. Gaskets to do the job again will cost more anyway

Yeah, a new primary chain is gonna be well over $100 I think.  I already have too much money sunk into this rebuild.

I'd like to know that too dakeddie. Mine measured 67mm and I left it alone.  Figure nobody knows?

Well... perhaps some kind soul out there has just put a new primary chain on and wouldn't mind measuring for us.

Kind souls?

search on primary chain new measure limit, you get one thread where someone says a new one is around 65mm so yours is 40% stretched from brand new if that is correct.

Good idea on the Search function zoomer  ;)  Just checked and see that was a reply from Clyde and from his other posts I believe his advice is very good. Great site here ;D

Thanks zoomer... I did try searching, but I guess I wasn't entering the right words to get anything useful.
