Hello from Southern California
« on: January 05, 2021, 05:53:41 PM »
New here and new to motorcycles in general.  Heck I dont even have a motorcycle license and my motorcycle isnt even registered yet. Lol but i thought I’d introduce myself and my bike that I’m not sure what I’m going to do with yet. Do here are some pics and a little back story.

My name is Jorge and what I have here is a 1978 CB 550k. My Dad bought it new back in 1978 and it only has 7k miles. It sat from 1983 - 1998 unused and moved from one garage to another and in 1998 i decided as a young man to learn how to ride. I slapped a new battery in it , I used a hand pump to put air into the flat tires and started it up. To my surprise it fired up and i jumped on and figured how to ride in a matter of hours up and down the block. So with a young mans discretion, i took her down the road to the gas station and filled her up with air and gas and had a grand ol time for a few days around the neighborhood. Finally one night will a plan in my head and a gut full of confidence i took it on the freeway. A few miles and At around 50ish miles an hour i could feel the back wheel wobble a little and decided it was time to turn around and head home. Another issue soon materialized, I could smell gas and i could hear light sounds of hissing which turned out to be gas hitting the hot engine. It made me decide to park it and there it sat in the garage until middle of last month. My Dad is cleaning his garage out and asked me what i wanted to do with the old bike. Since parking it, i’ve since married and gotten older. Now i can keep it or sell it but either way decision needs be made and the wifey is unhappy either way. Lol.

Ive already cleaned out the tank and red-kote it as well as bought a few things for it such as new instrument light, battery, rubbers for the tank and rubber battery strap. I plan on draining and changing the oil to see if she starts up.

Howdy!

Nice bike. I'm a big fan of the 550 and it's really nice to have an original, family-owned bike.

If you haven't already, download the full shop manual: http://manuals.sohc4.net/cb550/

Cheers

Hello from Lake Superior,

You forgot to mention about getting new tires and tubes.  We don't want you to have a repeat performance.

Lol,
I haven’t gotten that far yet. My next step is to change oil and filter and see if it runs and then move forward based on that. I believe i have several oil leaks.

I have lots of questions so im trying to search through the threads before asking. Lol

Yes wait on the tires until you have it running properly.

It's a good bike you have. I bought a new one in 77 for my 1st wife. They are fun to ride. Keep on bringing it back to life.
Get yourself a test tank for while you work on the bike rather than the regular tank.
You will need to clean the carbs by now.
