There are 4 books that were required reading when I was a kid and had a big impact on me.  Besides 1984, you can move Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, and Brave New World over too.

Orwell was not published in my country when I was a kid.  It was too close to reality for  comrades :) 

The Gulag Archipelago should be mandatory reading too, IMHO.

I really got into Nevil Shute when I was a kid. All time favourite was “Trustee from the Toolroom”. Just gave a vintage copy to my son and he really liked it too!

farenheit 451 is still my favourite book, still gets read once a year or so, the original film, though slightly different from the book, is a no miss one too

alan sillitoe was mandatory for the thinking young bloke in england ( lonliness of the long distance runner is his best ) , the book Kes or Kestrel for a Knave ( can't remember the author ) will always be on my shelf
