She's pretty now :) I've started the painting. Major work's done (except for engine) and now I'm on to twiddly bits.

goto be happy with that, btw nice touch with the disc cover, and chain gaurd.... wouldnt have thought to paint those.... keep us in the loop..peace

Tonight I painted the mount for the seat lock (but not the body) and the passenger footpegs (everything but the rubber).

Also, when painting the tank I learned about Bondo and shaved off the insignia and filled a couple dents :)

That looks awesome. Which bike is that? My gas tank and side of covers need paint. Am I correct in assuming that the tank emblem is just glued on?

That's a 1975 CB-550k. None of the badges were glued on. There are recessed mounts in the side of the tank (a long tab spot-welded to a pocket in the side of the tank) and foe the sidecovers there are 3 holes in each one.

You'll note I didn't fill the sidecover holes, I plan on replacing those emblems with a pair of custom made ones.

For the tank I removed the emblems, hammered the mount flat, and bondo'd the tank.

Now, don't get me wrong, I know how to properly, professionally paint a car. I painted my Ford Aspire and my MX3 myself (though for the MX3 I enlisted the help of a couple friends for masking). You can see pics of that here...

Now that I did over two weeks in a professional booth, with the held of 3 people. I wasn't looking for that big a project with the bike and I wanted to have a bit of an experiment. I wanted to see what results I could get with the average amatour environment.

I used only spraypaint from the hardware store (Primer, Topcoat, Clearcoat), sandpaper (60-220-320-400-and a scotchbrite pad), and Bondo.

And a LOT of time :) It took me 2 full days of work to do it (about 25-30 hours).

Hey, I like!  I'm thinking yellow for mine when it's running soundly and safely.  I have a yellow car as well, so it would be a matched set : )

i had my 76 550f osha saftey yellow for many years, and frankly i always loved it in yellow.  It's a sorta metal flake graphite
now, and although it looks more... maybe stately(?), the yellow thing always seemed more playful and sporty (not to mention
visible!)  The last yellow
combo was yellow tank with black side-cover and tank hatch with chromey-rubber edge trim on the tank. 
i also bondo'd in the tank badge mounts many years ago, and have always dug the minimalism there.

The only side effect of a yellow bike that i've noted, is that "ride yellow"  never sounds as cool as "ride red"  ;)

Safety - That's why I'm going yellow as well. Plus, it looks pretty cool. I may go more orangish though, kind of a school bus yellow. I just got an airbrush, so I'm gonna paint some wizards and heavy metalish type of murals on the tank. Just kidding, I'm saving that for my future 70's style van :)

I like the hint of yellow on the front brake.  Nice touch, really stands out.

pmpski, if you change that stock orange to yellow I believe a beating will be in order.

I do hope you're referring to a project bike.

Chris, no offense, I like the yellow but if you have a sweet "original" orange paintjob like pmp yah can't change it.

Zeke - No beatings will be in order :) I have a collection of spare parts to paint. The original tank is in ok condition, a few scratches and a bit of fading, but the side covers are in excellent condition. There is no way in hell that I would paint over the originals. I want to mod the bike a bit, but I'll be keeping all of the original parts in case I ever want to go back.

The reason I was asking is that my tank is rusty, scratched and generally beaten up (fortunately no dents though). I'm going to paint it but I'm going to have to remove the badges to do it right and then re-install them. I took a look at it last night, looks like a minor pain in the *ss that may require some %!#*!!  linguistic persuasion.

Hey kghost, "no estinkin badges". What movie was that again? :)

Tank emblems are not glued on.  They're held on with pins that insert into holes on a mounting tab that is welded to your tank.  There are little clips holding them in place.  They basically pry off.

Go get your parts manual and you'll see an exploded diagram of this.

that is really cool, and as mentioned previously, i love the detail to the chain guard and front brake. it stands out in a good way.

i'm happy with my green metal flake, though...

Thanks :) I just did some more detail, I painted the passenger pegs and the seat-lock.

Can I paint the Breather cover? How about the Valve cover? Or do these need powder coating or high-temp paint?

I'd like to paint the carb float bowls, if I remove these for painting, do they require new gaskets on reassembly?

Btw, where can I get one of those carb draining cups with the little trough on the side for draining the middle carbs?
