Newbie questions - CB400F drive chain
« on: January 14, 2021, 05:17:07 pm »
I just began to restore a 1977 CB400F and I have a few questions regarding drive chain & sprockets.
1- What is the dimension (428? 530? etc.) and # links of OEM chain? (there's no chain on my bike)
2- My current sprockets are 17T and 38T. Are they the OEM sizes?
3- What's the best place to buy those parts? (I've seen a few kits on EBay but not sure it's the best place). (Note: I'm in Canada)
4- What size of chain should I buy? Those seen on Ebay were mostly 530, some 520 and, I think, a few 42*. I used 530 chains on both my Kawasaki ZX11 so I'm tempted to think that a 530 is way overkill on a CB400F.
5- Is it required to replace the front sprocket's plate & bolts each time the sprocket is replaced?

6- Generally speaking, what are the best places to buy parts (other than chains & sprockets). I know some of them but maybe I am missing the best one(s). (Note: I'm in Canada)

530 chain was standard DO NOT fit "O" ring type and parts book will show you sprocket sizes and chain length
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Since you’re in Canada, Fortnine.ca is a good place for parts. Bought the chain for my 650 from them. You can add your bike to their system and it should tell you if it fits. I’d try to confirm from another source though.

Curious to know why  not using a o-ring chain. Thanks !

EDIT
I just read older posts and I understand that o-ring chains, because they’re wider, can rub against the LH shock.
But isn’t there an option for a smaller o-ring chain which would have about the same width than a HD 530 unit?

I tried to find a 520 sprockets + o-ring chain at my local dealer but it failed. So, I ordered standard 530 sprockets and HD chain.
