Header Bluing
« on: February 23, 2007, 06:57:00 AM »
I just bought a set of Kerker headers for my 750 SS and am looking for any suggestions on a coating to prevent bluing I have seen a few and was wondering if anyone had any luck using an interior coating.

Thanks in advance

All those "inner" coatings to prevent blueing are crap (my opinion).
Back when I worked at a high end v-twin shop we tried pretty much everything to get customers $2000 "custom" pipes from blueing up (with minimal if any success). We tried everything from spraying hightemp paint, to coatings, etc..

Allot of those pipes now are double-walled so the chrome finish will not blue, but that doesn't help
your situation now does it ? You could always headerwrap them if you don't like the blue, or have them ceramic coated and then polished (not as shiny as chrome, but still looks good)..

I used a product called Blue Shield by Kreem on a new set of single walled exhaust pipes for a CB 500 rebuild.  The pipes have been on for over 3000 miles and there is no bluing on the pipes.  The process puts a ceramic-like coating on the interior of the pipes which slows the heat transfer for the exhaust gas to the metal pipe.  This insulation keeps the external surface cooler.  I was happy with the results.

If it's a real Kerker system I don't think you'll have that problem.  The PO of my bike had kerker pipes on since 78 and they never turned blue, infact the only color change is a gold color at the 90 deg turndown, but that looks sweet!

A very lean mixture = more blue

A very rich mixture = no blue

Some blue means it is probably tuned well / blue all the way to the collector means you are about to spend big dollars on a melt down

A straw colored header is probably perfect for the street.
