honor flight
« on: April 13, 2022, 10:33:21 AM »
I was able to escort two Veterans on the honor flight to Washington DC, We started out late due to burned out lights on the plane. That caused a day long shuffle of start stop times and we didn't get to see the Aerospace Museum.
That's the downside, I got to witness these guys get a welcome they never got before, both at Washington's Dulles Airport and especially the welcome home in Moline Illinois. I'd guess a thousand or more people came to welcome them back.
We saw the WW2 memorial, looked up names at the Vietnam memorial, drove around the Iwo Jima memorial, saw the pentagon, the air Force memorial which is in the flight path of the plane that hit the pentagon. Lincolns memorial, the reflecting pool was empty for spring cleaning as was the WW2 pool. Too many others to list here.
Anyway, all of you Veterans around the world. Much respect and thank you for your service.

That's pretty cool Don!
I lived by the Udvar Hazey Aerospace musuem for a few years. My son was 2 to 4 years old and he lived going there.
All the memorials in DC are cool and we spent a lot of time there and the Smithsonian musuems too.

I'm glad you got to experience that.

I'm assuming you are a veteran, thank you for your service!

Actually, I'm not a Veteran myself. I got a relatively low draft lottery number in 1970 and was going to join, my Dad lost a brother in WW2 and asked (told) me to wait and see.
The war wound down, my only buddy that got a lower number than me went to Germany and had a pretty good time. He sent home lot's of stereo equipment and saw a few F1 races.

The Gaurdians pay $400 each for the trip, that helps offset the cost of the flight and provides help for the Veterans to keep track of which bus to get on and when, assistance getting off and on the transportation, wheel chair loading and pushing etc.

I found a neighbor's name on the Vietnam wall, failed to find a co-worker's name. I must have the spelling wrong. My relatives that went all made it back although not totally intact, my brother was signed up for jungle warfare training when he had his motorcycle wreck and got a medivac home.
I was concerned my other Vet would be a problem, he seemed grumpy and didn't want to wear a mask at orientation. I could not have been more wrong, he is an awesome person and I made a new friend. He drag raced a 68 Chevelle that he still has, owns a Goldwing and has a Motoguzzi V7 that a PO parked for 20 years project.

I was able to find my dad's cousin's name on the wall, I did a pencil etching of it.

Your new friend sounds cool
:-)
