Some fun stuff you can do will be to check the gas tank to see if its a real early one without the improved dimples for carb top clearance, long or short petcock and more once you read up at the Sandcast site. Wonder where the early #28 carbs ever disappeared to.

Thanks for ALL your comments. Really help me determine what to look for. I’m going to spend a few weeks doing research and making decisions. Thanks.

Unreal. Wow. Very happy for you. You'll be on a high for weeks during these tough times.

Does it have the thin lip alternator cover and the 9 hole clutch cover?

9 hole clutch cover. How do I identify the “thin lip” alternator cover? Thanks, J.

On a regular cb750 the alternator cover has a thick lip around the 9 o'clock position. The sandcast has a lip in the same position but it is only about 1/4" thick or even maybe an 1/8".

That's an amazing find. Congrats and enjoy it. The story is, engines were taken out of line for testing or repair and returned to the assembly line later. There were occasional earlier or later number spreads. The frame to engine number spread around the 10055xx range is around 400. Seen on multiple bikes in that range.

Yep, they did that a LOT before the K4 series got it nailed down better. My own K2 (11/71 build) came with a very early K1 engine in it. I think that had a lot to do with my placing well in the old "Factory Racing" days with it. The cam was an early K1 (higher lift than K2, finally wore it down by 138k miles, though), the carbs are 657a model, spark advancer the early AD125 version, stuff like that. Inisde, it had the wire retainers on the 2 innermost steel clutch plates (until I removed them), which are rarely found at all in the 750. I sometimes wonder if it was a 'junkbox engine'? :D

And yet, they still always run well!
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Thanks for the info. My big issue is the bike is missing the correct. Anyone have a set with 4 X throttle cable pull??

For sure an "UNBELIEVABLE" find. Congrats! I like the idea of keeping the patina...like on my patina candy blue/green KO which I sold last year. It looks to me like your bike will clean up pretty good. A true original when you get done with it. Great photos...thanks for exciting the forum over this neat find!

Hey John.

I know a local mechanic that has a set on the shelf. I saw them about 2 years ago but I'm not sure if they're for sale.

The later and by Honda  improved versions cost less ;)

The dream is to find one in need of a normal service. Maybe derusting inside of tank, flush engine with some quick oil changes and new tires.
Som work cleaning & polishing.
