I agree David that our tanks have very limited access holes and have contemplated getting good PDR tools as I have 3 tanks that need dents removed. Cutting access holes to do the PDR would be an option most likely necessary and patching will probably be in the mix to come.
And yes a good adjustable angle frame to hold the tank solid at various angles will be a necessity too.
There are some good PDR training videos on MC tank PDR out there.
Now the question....How deep into this do I go.....

I’ve watched a few videos and the pros just go in through the fuel cap. The guy I met with travels with a bucket of +50 different “sticks” he uses for reaching into different corners. Everyone was a different shape, with different ends……

This is a very early “wrinkle tank”. I want to save the original paint and definitely won’t be cutting any extra openings…….

I don't blame you for not wanting to cut it up...... I wouldn't want to either.
I'm interested in the outcome.

Not working on this one at the moment, but today  a neighbour stopped by and warmed up in my shop. He was splitting firewood with a large hydraulic rig on the back of his tractor. An especially knarly piece blew apart in the chute and “a large chunk flipped through the air and landed squarely on the hood of his new Dodge pick up truck”.

The dealership noticed the ding during his last service and suggested a Paintless Dent Removal service! Truck looks perfect, charge was reasonable, and the guy is 15 miles away! Sometime this week I’ll be paying him a visit with the Sandcast tank. Maybe he can help?

I have seen those guys work miracles! Best of luck
I am sure they know what they are doing but keep the tank nice and warm inside the house before you go. It will be real easy to crack 55 year old paint. being very warm will help prevent that,

Air wedge bag? Looks like it would reach and you would have total control.

Make sure that he has a stand to hold the tank securely to do the PDR. It has to be held solid to work the dents out.
I had 3 tanks done during December. They came out great. I still need to buff out the scratches of the 78K tank I bought that had a few dents in the side.
The other 2, a K1 and a K3 weren't as bad. Total cost was $500 for the PDR of the 3 tanks.

The problem with the air bag is the possibility of pushing the tunnel out of shape. On a sandcast tank it isn't worth the chance of screwing it up.
If the PDR guy has done bike tanks he can fix John's easy. Probably for $100-$150.

Yesterday I visited “Lash” to pick up the engine for my K6 Project. One of the side covers for this project is missing. He very generously dug these out for me. The plan with all the S/C body work is a light smoothing and clear coat. These will get the same treatment. Frank would be pleased!

Those side covers are faded by use or sunshine?
The color red is known to fade quick by sunshine.  Even here. Mostly cars for many years ago.

Always possible to paint later on or get new to paint.

Per…. It’s mostly sun faded but you can clearly see where flapping pant legs took the paint right off too. It’s very thin paint! This must be one of the reasons Honda made the next version so much smaller.

Smaller side covers an important upgrade.

Not working on this one at the moment, but I did receive a full set of carb manifold clamps from “James H” today. He also added a set of the correct top gaskets for the very early “four cable pull carbs”. Lovely stuff! Thanks you James!

Steve…. All the early bikes are plated silver. I have a large tub full of them, all pretty stained and corroded. I’ll clean up a decent set for the K6 project. James had these made to his specs. They are identical to the originals in every way. Not cheap, but very nice.

So….. Today I finished the K6. Also, received my invitation to attend the Cobble Beach Concours (Pre 1990 Vintage Japanese Motorcycle class) on the second weekend of September! Went back to work on the hold down bracket the local “Paintless Dent Removal” guy insists I have to build. He needs to be able to clamp it in a vice to do his thing. Need to get it to him ASAP.

Next on the list is blasting and painting the original seat pan. I have a Yamiya “red foam” kit and a really nice cover ready to go on. I managed to save all the chrome trim bits and strap hardware…..

Also need to get the engine covers (they have been vapour blasted) off to the polisher. Lash left a full set to be done, so Greg the polisher will be happy to see me with “beer money”. Having a deadline is good.

Got the “tank hold down table” almost finished today. This is all so the Paintless Dent Removal guy can work his magic.

Started with an old piece of 1” counter top (the cutout for a stainless steel sink) that came from my scrap wood pile. Mounted a full length of 2” X 4”  piece of lumber to the underside, so the plate can be fixed in a vice or WorkMate style clamping bench. To ensure a wobble free fit I took a cut off the top side of the 2” X 4” and glued and screwed it down.

Next I shaped a 1” pine board to fit tightly wedged in the underside of the tank. Mounted it to the main table, so as I push the tank towards the rear of the table it jams into the wedge and prevents the tank from any side movement.

Finally “Magivered” a T shaped piece of hardware that mounts the two front rubbers in the tank cups. Attached a turnbuckle that can be snugged up to push the tank down and back, tightly into the wedge!

Final challenge is to hold down the back of the tank securely (where the rubber tank strap usually goes). I was about to drill a hole in the tank bracket and drive in a big screw, when I decided to pause for the day.

In the photos, the table is clamped to a vice, so I can spin it around. Interestingly, when I tried a K1 tank on the table, the wedge piece is far too small. The “Wrinkle Tank” is much tighter to the bike frame. It must hold a lot more fuel than the later tanks…..
