I'm thinking 4 or 44 means 1969, Honda was numbering for short term ID in their factory. They weren't expecting us to care in 2022.

Built switches into new bars today.

Terry...... If you read this, thanks for sending the switches back. Did you ever look at them? I just opened your package today and to my surprise, the LHS switch was a slightly later style. The correct switch was still on my shelves!!! I sent you the wrong one...... what an idiot I am.

Bars are done. The single cable throttle tube needs some sanding before the grip goes on.

I put the grips in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes. Pull them out hot and leave them wet. They slide on very easily. A few minutes later, totally dry, they shrink back to size, well secured.

Another 5-6” of snow last night, so spent half the day plowing and shovelling. Living +1200 feet UP from the road has it’s advantages and not. No complaints, the entire Family has another down hill ski day planned for Sunday. Sunshine and blue skies for the next few days.

Got in the shop for a bit this afternoon. Cleaned, polished, lubricated and mounted the brake pivot/bracket. Under a bit of crud, the original finish was perfect. Even the pin slid out easily. This bike was never left outside..... Front fender is on and installed the new handle bars. I wonder how many pieces make up a cb750? Amazing how little difference a dozen makes! No pics.

Thanks Per. Determined to enjoy this one and take it slow. Wasting lots of time cleaning and polishing hardware and small bits, but I want this bike to be “99%” original. Spotted this one yesterday and hope mine will look like this:

I was comparing the bike to photos from “day one”. A few parts have moved on..... The points cover that was on the S/C ended up on the Chopper, that is now in Indianapolis!

Patina might increase the price on this old bike as Frank wrote earlier.
That will show an original part, not new or NOS.

My K6 has also that kind of ignition cover. Look good on a modified bike.

Honda stock ignition covers cost crazy money today!

When Don mentioned the prices of those covers, I realized I was using one as an astray! It’s cleaned up, and put away....

I miss Frank bugging me about not restoring this bike. He pestered me non stop.

Yesterday, I cleaned up the brake caliper swivel bracket. I was going to blow some paint on it, but it looked fine. In deference to him, I bolted it on. It looks great. The original “scarred with history” paintwork is dedicated to him. Never met him, but wish I had.

Mounting the front fender stays and discovered a small problem. The slash cut ends were slightly flared out. Maybe the chrome shop handled it a bit too much when plating and polishing? Made up a small clamp with plastic covered ends and slightly pressed the two edges at both ends. Got both stays cleaned and prepped and it all went together smoothly. The last little screw I tightened cracked one of the tiny black spacers on the bottom stay (between the stay and fender).

Pissed me off, so I dropped the tools and went up to the house. I have a bag of extras somewhere!

More rain and then freezing rain today. Slid (literally) into the shop for an hour, I like doing a little bit, every day. Replaced the cracked spacer (see above) and while searching for a spare, stumbled on a “throttle drag thumb turn screw thingy” that was missing on this bike. Cleaned up nicely and that shortcoming is fixed. Original speedo cable is in excellent shape, so cleaned, lubed and installed. Tested all the lamps in the speedo before assembly and screwed it all together and on the bike. Both instruments just came back from cb750Faces and look fantastic. Photos after the tach gets done.

The original horn has slightly pitted chrome, but when tested, just about blew me out of the shop. Thinking it probably hasn’t made a sound since 1977-78, I polished it up and hung it in place. It stays.

Waiting for the rear hub and brake backing plate to return. Guy down the road polishes “big rigs” and does small bits for me. Dug up some new bearings from parts bins getting set to build a rear wheel next. My buddy Gary is coming for a shop day tomorrow. He’s taken on cleaning the major crud off the engine, before I pull off top end. I’m in debt to Covid Boredom, much appreciated! Picture is “inspirational”.

A good looking patina bike is probably hard to find, except for those parked in a dry garage or store room so it never rusted during all years.

But such bike has a story to tell when the use is visible enough to know it's all original.

Another thing that the owner never rebuilt the bike that was a must back then. Original 4-4 and paint not good.

Now completely different. A stock CB is very beautiful when clean and polished.

Polisher just called, rear hub and backing plate are done. Rear wheel building time, after new bearings. Will pick it up later in the week.

Spent some time mounting the tach, front brake light switch tee, and used my grease gun to “pop” the piston out of the caliper housing. The piston was absolutely spotless, but I did find the usual amount of crusty crap under the seal! Will need to find my dental pick and get some new ends for my Dremel. Dismantled the seat latch bracket and blasted it clean, prepping for black paint. Into the “endless tasks” portion of the restoration. No point in making any work lists yet!

GOOD SHOP PRACTICE: I learned this years ago, from a very experienced guy who rented a space in our race shop: Any job that is not 100% complete and torqued down gets a small yellow zip tie attached. When the job is done, remove it.

I used to see guys in the plumbing trade test fit, and then forget to glue or solder the joint. They could have used a yellow zip tie.

In addition to starting the rear wheel, “clocks” and fender stays in place. Caliper swivel too.
