Great work, very impressive! I need a sandcast to round out my collection. So far I only have a low 3 digit motor on a stand in my rec. room.  :)

He has a rare wife…
Friend who lives in Utah, his wife is an AHRMA racer and has been for decades. They have a collection of bikes on display around the house. Lots of interesting old race bikes of note mostly…not bikes Beth has raced, but significant bikes.

I know several guys who bought the replica CR racer that was 50cc dohc design had them on display in their house. Musselman Honda here in town has one on display and some dickhead stole the gas cap off it!
(Honda cb50r)

BaT sold one recently for $13750

Mecum sold one in 2018 for only $7700

Pistons cleaned up today. New ring gaps were all less than 1/2 the wear limit gap (I’m reusing original std. pistons with new std. rings in the very lightly honed, original bores). The three piece oil rings in my new RK set  did NOT fit in the pistons. Measured up the original (single piece) oil rings and they too were less than half the wear limit gap. They are going back in..... Not “best practice” but moving ahead.

The 12 X 22 mm dowels that are suppose to go between the barrel and head are way too long, for this early motor. Fortunately I have a shorter set in a “bin”. Same as the ones that connect the case to barrel.

Thankless morning cleaning the top of the case, in prep for the barrel. Walked away and will do it all again tomorrow. Diving through stacks of collected gaskets, I think I will use this old, made in the USA, Best Gasket Set.

At least you aren't needing a new gasket to split the cases, just a new thin layer of Threebond. Not that splitting the cases is enjoyable, at all for such a mistake...

Spent the morning setting up the top end build. My buddy Gary comes from Toronto, one day a week, for a “shop day”. Was going to leave it until he showed up, but it magically slid together! Came up to the house to re-read torque procedure notes from PeWe and Hondaman..... Picture later.

Well done. I wonder why the guys all pull down so hard? All my manuals suggest 15.9 ft.lbs. for the main head nuts. I used 16 and it seemed plenty! We’re going away for almost 6 weeks, so I think I may just stop and retorque when we return. I’m determined not to rush this one.....

I had to turn down both ends of a 10mm deep socket to get to the outside “barrel screws”. The machined bore holes, down through the head casting, on this early engine, are MUCH smaller than any other I’ve built before. Usually one of my 1/4” drive sockets will drop in there. Not this one!

Fortunately, my deep 10 mm socket would fit down to the 6mm bolts.   I also wonder why some guys go so tight on the head bolts, I stopped at 18ft lbs.

I'm glad, cause I don't have a lathe to fix 'em.   8)

I’ll probably go +1 on the retorque, but I never touched the studs so not looking for trouble!
The Sandcast has very small holes, none of my sockets were even close.

My next diecast engine has 5/16" allen bolts where the 6mm's were.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

I’d think a replaceable stud would be good too?

Ny K2 head has very tight holes for the M6 bolts under the coins.
1/4" 10mm socket could not get in there.

I used allen heads of same lenght with washers. Then no problem to tighten with my 1/4" torque wrench.

Stock bolts have JIS on hex head.
Early too? Then use a JIS on extension rod to wrench.

Here’ s my very early cam cover (known as a “waffle” cover as there are several “X” shapes cast on the underside). Some real differences I noticed when comparing to several others I have in the “spares”. There is no lock tab under the bolt that retains the tach drive shaft. I will fit one! Also noticed that all my covers have a date stamp inside. Never noticed this before.

Clearly date stamped April 8, 1969. Three weeks before my 16th Birthday.......
