You can use that with future tanks when you have got the dent bending skill ;)

Finished up hold down fixture today. The rear clamping mechanism was a bit of a challenge, but it turned out OK. The whole thing was such a mish/mash of scrap bits that I finished it off with a coat of black (hides a lot of evil) paint! Photos tomorrow and then the tank goes off to the “Dent Doctor”.

Next item will be to get all the engine covers of to the polisher. The weather is quickly becoming nice enough to get the engine painted. I do this outside, so need a nice day.

Per….the “throat” of the Sandcast “wrinkle tank” must be a lot narrower than the later models. When I tried a cb750K1 tank on the centre wedge piece, it slides right back over it. I’ll need to cut a new piece for that if I want to mount the later ones.

In a word, yes: the tanks got wider and lower in the 3/71 'Kaizen' of the K1 series. It wasn't published much, but we noticed right away when we sat on the newer bikes: you couldn't see very much of the engine when you sat on the new bikes. The tanks blocked the view: you could read the "SOHC" casting letters on top of the cam covers on the earlier bikes, but not after that.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The tank is pushed forward, tightly on a 1.5” high, large centre wedge block and then clamped at both ends. There is a “fin” underneath (full length 2x4” lumber glued and screwed) that can be clamped in a vice or WorkMate style bench.

The back end is a 2 X 4” with a 1/4” ply centre bit glued in. The tank strap bracket sits in it solidly. The top clamp piece screws down hard and really fastens down that end.

Might have happened after the original foam in the seat degraded and the slop in the seat cover started rubbing the tank with movement on the seat by the rider hitting the twisties!

This gives me some idea's.   have been mulling over the idea of picking up some paintless hammers and stuff and getting started on the practice needed.  Building that hold down is the hardest part of getting started.

Go for it! It took a few days, but really clamps it solidly.

Vapour blasted covers, packed and ready for the polisher. Includes the very early “nine hole clutch cover”. Headed there tomorrow.

Bead blasting the original seat pan next. It’s a much heavier gauge steel than later bikes. As a result, I didn’t break a single one of the sharp little tabs that retain the cover (so far!).

Finished cleaning the motor. Have to tape up some old covers and it’s ready for paint. The weather has to warm up a bit and stop raining. I want to paint outside!
