Thanks to “JTMARKS”. Beautifully packaged and spotless heat shields. The correct ones for early bikes, shiny but not polished. As usual, my helper was unimpressed!

Kudos to Yamiya as well. I decided the replacement seat cover I’ve had stashed away for a few years was not quite right. Ordered one of theirs on the last day of July and it arrived earlier today. It looks identical to the original, in every detail too.

“Rebuilding” the original seat pan is definitely way more effort, time and money than one of their “replacement” seats, but what the hell……

Funny you should mention that! I just sent off a small ($200) Yamiya order, for a few little items I still need. For once, I’ve actually kept track of what’s been spent on this machine. Not time, just cash.

For those of you that have been following along; Care to guess what that number is? I won’t be posting any details, but I will definitely congratulate the closest/winner. For simplicity, pitch your answer in $US. Good Luck!

Now the fun starts. “Bench Sync.” is the next job. It’s a pain and the reason Honda quickly went to the “mechanical bridge” set up for the K1 and forward. It’s easy to see in this photo how prone the cables in #1 and #4 are to jumping out of the brass furls on top of the carbs…..

I’ve often thought about sliding on 4 X 1” pieces of shrinks wrap that I could heat up around that joint, after the final vacuum sync. Just under the rubber boot would help to keep that cable down in the recess where it belongs. Of course, I forgot again!

Finishing up the carbs for the Sandcast Project. It uses the very early 4-1 pull cables, so mechanical “bench syn’c” is a little different. First thing is to adjust all four cables equally slack so the slides all bottom out….. #4 carb refused to close up. Small gap under the slide, but definitely “hanging”. Crap. Did I put the slide in backwards?

Took #3 and #4 off the cables and pulled the slides to compare. Both cables had equal runout, so not that. Pulled the needles and both slides ran smoothly and sat down in the bores, no stickiness, no obstructions. Not backwards. Mmm.

Dropped the needles down into the carbs and #4 seemed to be stopping early and somewhat sticky. Pulled it out and it’s not bent, nice and clean. Get the micrometers out and carefully compare it to #3. Same dimensions, tapers appear identical. Pulled the emulsion tubes and they appear identical, both on OD an and ID. All the holes are clear and clean. Screwed #3 back in and smooth sailing. As I turn in #4 I can feel it dragging as I screw it in…. What the heck? Threads look perfect and then all the lights come on!! Check the second photo carefully the TOP of the tube is slightly tipped over (bent). The needle can’t drop down fully because the internal bore is NOT straight! How the hell did this happen?

I did get these carbs from someone else and I’m sure he didn’t know about this issue and honestly I can’t even imagine how it would happen? BUT IT DID. Fortunately I went through all my junk and found one in a set of carbs I haven’t used yet. Next time you think you have seen everything; think again. Put it all back together and called it a day.

Denis…. It does look odd in the photo. It’s just the top of a new Castrol spray on chain lube can! The straw is snapped into a slice out of the side. Very fancy. It was the first thing I grabbed to get the emulsion tube up off a VERY cluttered bench!

Bill….. I think they were an old set of carbs from a K1 and fortunately the tube appears to be identical. Frustrating couple of hours, that ended well.

Yikes that is bent isn't it.

Stu….Funny how obvious it looks in that photo. Rolling around on the bench, using my “cheater” glasses, I almost missed it. I never really saw it at all. One time, screwing the tube in with the needle fully dropped, I could feel the drag every half rotation. The further it turned in, the worse it got. That’s what made me really look closely.

Glad you sorted that out, at least you had a spare to fall back on rather than sweating the problem of finding another...

The yen to dollar is more favorable lately ranging around 150 yen to a $ US. Does that mean Yamiya parts are more affordable???
