Early this morning I had a good long look over the S/C. Ended up working on my much ignored cb750K3. It needed a RHS bar switch replaced and the starter motor safety switch bypassed (it’s been behaving wierdly for a while). There is nothing left to do on the ‘69. Called my buddy Terry and heading to his place on Friday morning to tackle the seat rebuild.

Celebrated by taking the K3 for a nice ride, followed by a swim in our pond.

Ordered another zero maintenance battery for this project from Kapscomoto.com

At about US$40.00 and free shipping via Canada Post, these are a great deal. I’ve had one in my K1 for +4 years now. Tired of swapping in a battery for every test!

Stev-o reports they are even less in the US from Walmart……

Packed and ready for a day of seat building tomorrow (and ride #26). Not a cb750, but it is a HONDA!

Two of us struggled and fought the Yamiya cover, red foam, and strap onto my original seat pan. Took us +3 hours but it was worth it! Even saved all the pins and chrome trim. The red foam and seat cover from Yamiya are superb, but as they actually state on their website: “best installation by a professional”! Their cover does not stretch. It is of a very high quality. Compressing the foam and getting it down all around was a challenge. Perfect fit. We reused all the chrome trim and fasteners and  the Yamiya strap and hardware. Terry had all the right pullers, clamps, punches and adhesive. True “rebuilt original”.

Yamiya does sell really good stuff.

Fantastic outcome John, you and Terry did great work on that cover. Really makes a difference having the tools and knowledge for tough ones like that... I'm sure your hands on the task were helpful too as often you wish you had a 3rd hand on some jobs...

My hands are sore! We could have used a third set! No way could I have done this myself. The Yamiya cover is very strong with absolutely no stretch! Even their strap was cut to the correct length. We used it all.

Did you set the strap 1st to hold the cover in place before stretching the cover on?

Stu….. No we didn’t. The cover is so perfectly made that we realized the stitched seam needed to be EXACTLY on the seat pan edge, all the way around. First we glued the (original) small rubber strip, all the way around the edge. Then “spot glued” the foam in place, with a full line of glue all the way around the edge line. The “red foam” is so well made it sits perfectly square. Terry also had the correct contact cement for the job. Applied to both surfaces, let dry completely and then stick. The only way to move it is cut it away! Next, he trimmed the excess foam, hanging down over the side and then it was all about pulling the cover over and down. We started in the middle and worked to the ends.

I managed to save and repair the three chrome strips, 8 pins and “push nuts” that we also reused. Terry marked the holes with push pins while we were working the cover and then had the right punch tools for clearing the holes when we were done. This seat pan was much thicker than any I’ve worked on previously. Not one of the cover tabs (point cut outs) broke and every one of them is back in place!

Very tough job. I could have not done this on my own and Terry’s expertise was obvious. Totally pleased with the outcome.

Bonus day! When I arrived home a small package from Australia was sitting in the kitchen. I have a “recessed key switch” and key! One of the few items that was missing from the bike. Thank you Terry in Australia and Steven V.

I’m looking for blue “flag decals” that came on the rear shocks. Vintagecb750.com shows them (lower left) on one of their decal sheets. Currently out of stock. Anyone have one sitting around?

Fitted the seat and subbed in a spare K1 tank to see how it all lined up. Tightened it up and pinned it. My companion was as impressed as usual……

Look like a good survivor, John!
You will hopefully get the real Sandcast tank.
Wrinkles inside another detail to enjoy for the initiated SOHCers.  Increase the bike's  value independent of outside look I guess.

I have three left over strips of the red foam that were cut off the sides and rear, because they hung down too far.

I’ve seen people use these bits (sliced to 1/2 thickness) to stuff in the underside holes of an older, original seat. Sharpens up the appearance and stops the crumbly bits from constantly dropping out.

Also extremely useful if you’ve restored a seat with white foam, and want to cover it up to have the look of red foam. Let me know if you want them. You pay the postage.

This motorcycle had an older Honda key switch, but definitely a replacement. Missing the correct original style “recessed key” switch. Found one in Australia and it fits/ works perfectly. It’s in better shape than I’d hoped for with new rubber ends and plastic sheathing. Thank you Steven V. He has a number of parts listed on the “Sandcast and K0” FB pages. Buy from him with confidence. His price was  less than what I saw on EBay and the condition of the part is far nicer.

Oh Yeah  ;)

Not only was it in perfect shape, it got here in a bit more than a week!! I really like this photo. With that key switch, the horn on the left side, and the slash cut fender, it’s pretty easy to spot: Sandcast!

Just came across these shocks in a box of parts. The shocks are the 3 position with the decals. Never would have noticed but for your post about the decals.

Those are the ones! They are on a few of the repro decal sets, currently out of stock. You reminded me I have the bottom collars off the original shocks and want to try and fit them to the new ones.they are five position and a dead giveaway.

Nice job on the seat, John

Thanks! Picked up the bits for the original petcock this morning. Very different than later styles. I bet it’s identical to what’s on a cb450. On the right, the Yamiya rebuild kit fit perfectly. Now if I can JUST GET MY TANK BACK!
