John, you may have mentioned earlier, but what are your long term plans for the bike?  Plan on keeping it?

Denis….. No plans. If I get it accurately appraised, the insurance premiums will be high (Ontario has some very rich insurance companies!). Definitely going to enjoy it for now.

The Judges were extremely knowledgeable..

I had wondered about that, would they even know what a "Sandcast" was? And when I think of "concours", It is typically perfectly restored vehicles such as the other bikes you were up against.  Once again, congrats!

PS. Was there only 1 class winner for all 12 bikes? Or other categories to win in??

Steve…. Messed that answer up. Only one winner. They create a single class that changes every year. Last year was American and the year before (when I took the Benelli) was Italian. I think next year will be British.

Cobble Beach just sent us this photo. Taken in front of the main Clubhouse, then off to the “Winner’s Circle” for champagne! These fellows really know how to top off a great weekend.

Checkout their website for a truly stunning line up of winning cars.

Projects are never really done. At the show I realized the side stand was “short” and missed hitting the rubber disc on the lower pipe….. Today I removed it and it’s visibly bent, right up near the bolt end. Set it up on blocks in the press and gave it a “push”. Once straight it lined up perfectly in every direction and the bike sits nicely on it.

Hint…. I discovered a great way to reinstall the spring, a while back (wear safety glasses and gloves for this stunt). Put the side stand in the down position and hook the spring at the frame end. Take a large Phillips screwdriver and line up one of the tip grooves under the hook on the stand. Loop the spring on the shaft of the screwdriver. Using both hands, push straight down on the handle of the screw driver. Everything gets really tight but as soon as the shaft gets below the hook, the spring shoots up the screwdriver shank and snaps into place.

Still to do:
1) repair, polish and install the original pipes.
2) repair and install a faded air box to match the rest of the “bodywork”.
3) oil and filter change.
4. Full Winter prep.

Yesterday looked like the last one of some very fine weather. Put +25 miles on the “Sandcast” and it just seemed to perform better and better! Dumped the oil and filter when hot. Fresh will go in today and not sure after that? Winterize? Maybe not just yet!

Just wondering, did you re-use the oils hoses?
I don’t remember if I read about them.
Very nice sandy. Keep it alive!

Steve…. Busy with the race car, missed your question. To answer: Yes (sort of)! The visible, outside line is the original. It cleaned up really well. I polished the ends and washed the hose with a thin mix of black paint and varsol. They are quite unique, very smooth hose and easily spotted by the “experts”.

The back pipe on mine had been previously replaced and I could see why. There was a brutal bit of welding “splash” that must have sliced through the original rubber hose and was 1/2 way through the second one. It was the later style with the braided look. I smoothed up the frame, before paint and replaced the hose with the best used one I had. Not perfect, but almost invisible…..

Both the new 17T sprockets I had put away for this project are too thick. Machined the raised step off one side of one today and it fits and lines up perfectly. The bike came with a fairly worn 16T that I used originally. Thought I was done?

A fellow that saw this motorcycle at Cobble Beach called today. He has a “client” that wants a Sandcast for his collection. I told him to keep looking.
