Finally found a reasonably priced bike trailer
« on: February 21, 2007, 10:18:54 PM »
I will post pics as soon as I take possession of it, but I just came to terms with a guy who was selling a motorcycle trailer for $200 on Craigslist. It was advertised as home made, but it sure doesn't look like it. He advertised it as a dirt bike trailer but it is sturdy enough for my street bikes I am sure.

It has new tires (15" rims), leaf springs (off an old Buick), new wheel and axle bearings, a forward mounted lockable storage bin, is wired for lights and has a fresh black paint job.

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that I got a great deal.

My wife has been stonewalling me, saying "we can't afford one" , or "we don't need one" (she alternates between the 2 arguments). But at this price, even if I decide to turn around and sell it (unlikely), there is no way I will lose money. I have been pricing trailers for months and most of the ones I see are priced higher than $500, and many of them are junk.

It is hard to find a trailer for under 500. For 200, you are almost obligated to do it!  Best i have been able to fine new was at lowe's and northern tool, but I have not been able to look at them yet to see if they will hold up to my bike and a rebel.

I looked for used trailers for months, but they really don't depreciate much.  Never found a good deal, so I just bought one of these 4X6 tiliting trailers from Northern Tool for $350.  I couldn't slip a "motorcycle" trailer by the wife, but I could justify a "utility" trailer.  Works pretty well, might want to go for the 8' long model if you've got a big bike.  I like this model because I can stand it on end in my garage and store it.  The tires are just 12", so it might not be good for cross country hauling.

Can you fit 2 bikes on that 4x6 trailer?

What is the weight limit of that trailer? Our bikes are 600 pounds lets say and the rebel is about 350. I need a trailer to hold 1000 pounds. I bet the one I was looking at tis the next step up.

Not sure how it's figured, but it has a 2000 lb GVWR.  It's listed as having a 2000 lb axle.  It's well made, but I can't see loading a ton of anything on this trailer.

Here's the manufacturer's web site:

You might have to get creative to load two bikes.  A 5'X8' would be a lot better for hauling two or even one big bike.  My little 400F hangs over the end of this trailer a few inches with the front tire straight against the front rail.

I think that's just the manufacturer's web site.  They sell them through Northern Tool and Tractor Supply Co.  Seems to be the same price at both places.

Harbor Freight sells them too. Just be sure to get the biggest sized wheels available if you plan on any highway driving or carry a lot of spare wheel bearings with you.
