All In Good Time - A Restomod 736
« on: March 17, 2020, 11:53:09 PM »
Hello All.

August 2017 I picked up a 1977 CB750 K7 - mostly complete - not running - with a title - registered as non opp in California, so no back fees. It was and is my first bike, I rightfully had no idea what I was doing picking up a bike in such disrepair. It's March 2020 now and it's finally coming together after amassing a slew of parts while working on each component one by one. This whole thing turned into a learning exercise of figuring it out and making things better.

The goal of this project (after about 6 months with it) was to make everything better, lighter, and faster, in a period correct esq way. A heavy massage like Singer Vehicle Design does with their Porsche tribute builds (no bondo here though).

I'll be keeping a cue of all the parts / components here and will update with photos in the next few days.

Engine:
Low mile K3 motor (sub 10k believed).
Kenny Harmon D Grind cam out of the original bike I salvaged.
Cycle X manual cam chain tensioner.
Repainted in NuCast Aluminum Paint, side covers vapor blasted and brushed.
CycleX gaskets.
Stainless steel hardware.
Offset 530 Sprocket.

Intake:
Early pop top carbs.
Velocity stacks, jetted accordingly.
Ram Air Filters.

Exhaust:
MotoGPWerks 4 into 1, picked up from Chris who's local to me.

Suspension:
RaceTech Springs and Gold Valves up front.
Ikon Shocks out back.
NHK steering dampener on the side.
CNC'd 6061 triple clamps.

Brakes:
Dual pot fronts, milled out for lightness.
Phenolic pistons.
EBC Sintered Pads.
Galfer Stainless Steel Lines.
EBC in the factory drum.
Yamaha rotors for lightness.

Frame:
Chopped and hooped.
Detabbed, cross braced.
CNC'd 6061 motor mounts / hangers.

Oil System:
Setrab Oil Cooler.
CycleX oil line adapters.
Randakks oil filter adapter.
8AN lines
Mahle filter - both for quality and aesthetics.
Custom aluminum oil tank / air oil separator *still in development*

Wheels / Tires:
Sun Rims built by Buchanan's.
18 front - 110/80-18 Avon Roadrider
18 rear - 130/70-18 Avon Roadrider
Stainless spokes.

Electronics:
Anti Gravity battery.
Dyna S ignition.
Ricks reg/rec
Custom purpose built harness.
Switch gear out of the space shuttle.

Controls:
Renthal drag bars.
Cognito Moto rearset adapter plates + rearsets.

I'm sure I'm missing a few but all in good time.

Sounds like a cool build. I'm in Oceanside for the winter, my 75 and 76 are in NH as my back can't ride on them cross country anymore so I ride my wing to get here and back. I am helping a friend get his 74 up and running that his father in law gave him. No major upgrades at this time to just get it running and rideable for now.

That's a pretty decent parts list.  I'd love to see photos of where it's at now.

Alright, it's been a bit. Been graduating school finally out here and now it's time to get this thing finished along.

This may be a long post getting up to speed with parts and photo dumps so here we go.

The bike shortly after i got it...

Added rear hoop, cross braced, seam welded, and weldless frame kit.

I sourced a sub 10k mile motor from a forum member last august. Spent a few days cleaning it up and repainting it in a Nu-Cast Aluminum color. These side covers were just used for masking, have alternatives that will be vapor honed.

CycleX oil line adapters.

Randakks oil filter adapter.

I'll be running an oil pressure gauge up top with my regular gauges.

CycleX manual cam chain tensioner.

Rebuilt rear drum with EBC shoes.

Lighter, yamaha rotors from a fellow forum member here.

One of two calipers to assemble, lighter and milled out, phenolic pistons, ebc pads.

18 inch, front and rear via Buchanan's

IKON shocks, these are factory 13.33 inch which have just been replaced with a 14 inch set they made up for me to get the correct geometry with the 18's.

Steering dampener.

Fork legs, all cleaned up.

Drilled out pushrods.

RaceTech internals.

New seals and stanchions.

And all stuffed into the factory 35mm forks.

Velocity stacks, yes there will be filters over these.

Oil tank internals example A.

Oil tank internals example B.

Oil tank internals example C.

And we've got an oil tank!

And an aft mounted vent / catch can!

An idea for new motor mounts, may of spent too much time admiring Matt's bike out at Gingerman this past summer... and got a bit inspired.

Motor mounts machined on a HAAS 3 axis machine, front left, front right, and rear right.

LOTs to do but this is where we're at today. I'll be working along on the fuel tank form and aluminum work next, adding a few mount tabs on the frame for the oil cooler, oil tank, and exhaust hanger. Then off to powder coat.

Very nice work so far.

Is the motor stock displacement with a stock cam?  I was wondering since you had so many other mods.  Will you be using twin brake rotors up front?  If so have you considered upgrading your calipers?

Do you mind posting some photos of your frame bracing?

The motor is stock with the exception of a Kenny Harmon D grind cam. I have a RC Eng stamped 890cc engine cases, with windowed lower case, bored cylinders, matching pistons, and a ported and polished head for something down the road ideally. Would love to have that built with high compression and revs along with some RS34s but that gets quite pricey for this go. So for now that's the mockup motor and paperweights for now.

Yes, dual rotors up front. K7 calipers with phenolic pistons, ebc pads, the carriers have been lightened and the caliper modified for normal banjo fittings. Will have new braided lines and a new master cylinder.

Frame at the moment is just cross braced in front and rear of motor. May add more above the swingarm pivot, where they're typically braced.

Looking awesome dunc! The front left motor mount is awesome. Been thinking of a way to run something like that on my next race bike and now I'm taking inspiration from you! Keep it up!

Thanks Matt! I basically reproduced the factory mount profile, nothing crazy and looks the part.

Definitely keeping it up here haha!

Any more progress on this one dunc? I looked back through the detail photos again and things look really good.

I did notice that it appears your cam chain tensioner is on backwards. The larger foot on the bolt should go inside with a small hex on the outside.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Something something progress update...

Yes Matt! Definitely on backwards... I know this is as convoluted as asking someone what kind of oil they like to run during a full moon but if anyone has any pointers on proper tension with a manual adjuster I'm all ears...

The motor has been in the frame for a few good months and off the table as I worked on getting a modern Triumph triple rebuilt for track duty and some work on a mint Ducati 848 I've been enjoying for myself. Also completed another 'side' project - a 1985 BMW K100... All cafe'd out with endurance race suspension, brakes off a larger police bike, shorty exhaust, and modern electrics. Also started working as a designer for a small OEM Motorcycle manufacture so some side projects have been slightly neglected.

As far as the Honda goes, i've recently fully rebuilt and refinished the carbs. Vapor honed and fresh plated hardware, with some nice little stacks. The bike is back on the table with the starter installed and it turns up just super. Next up is to install the ignition system, set static timing, jury rig a harness together for initial startup. Also need to make up some short AN lines from the oil tank directly to the motor, I have an oil cooler which probably won't be necessary anymore. The first version of the oil tank will work well for a while, planning already on making another withs some tweaks. That all being said I'm hoping to have this bike making some good noises in the next few short days... Hope you're all well out there!

Distractions tend to be distracting, all in good time.

_D

And the distractions...
