Opinion on my cylinders and stud sealing area?
« on: February 19, 2021, 11:11:36 AM »
So I took the cylinder off my 78' cb750f after a lot of effort due one of the studs being rusted pretty badly and after inspection it looks like one of the areas for what I think is to seal the cylinder studs has deteriorated just in this one spot. My big concern is i'm getting this cylinder bored and matched to my pistons very soon (at $114 per cylinder at that) and wanted your honest opinion on if Ill be alright to reuse these cylinders? I know Ive had a lot of questions lately guys but I really appreciate ya'll helping me on my first engine rebuild!

For reference Alan the hole to the right is what its suppose to look like? Ive heard that these seals are not even needed which would make mating services not matter anyway hoping i can just apply some rust treatment and be done with it?

Id look elsewhere for the cylinder boring work. That's an obscene price.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I think you just need to clean all of the crud out of the hole and it's counterbores thoroughly before developing the idea that it's somehow worn.

I remember reading in that leak-free top end thread about these seals not being necessary, I even mentioned it to Hondaman somewhere and he was like, "wait, WHAT?" So I'm going to go with the idea that all of the seals Honda intended are going to be needed in my engines, doing anything less would be inviting leaks.

That’s the price you pay for living in the Bay Area, to be honest he does a great job and he thoroughly cleans and preps the cylinder for paint so it’s worth it to me. I’m not sure about the seals either might just install them to be in the safe side!

I pay around $225US for all 4.
Blast cylinder clean often included, max 25 extra for extensive glass beading.

I was told same price when bore 64mm to 67mm.
I'll see when done.
It should cost more, but I have let them do some work recently. Cylinders and heads.
