Newbie
« on: February 21, 2021, 02:31:21 PM »
Hi from Leicester, I own a 1995 Triumph Trident 750 which underwent a mild restoration after standing in a shed for 13 years. My latest purchase is a 1977 Honda CB550F Super Sport American import, and it looks as if it has been stored for a long time. It now has age related plates, good old DVLA they put the body type down as a Scooter. I have started the restoration process, currently working on the carburetors. I will  be looking for info & help in the future with such things as hard to source parts etc. My 1st question is: how do i bring the wiring loom into the 21st century.
Many thanks in advance, Tony.

Howdy!

You can get wiring harnesses from a couple of sources. Two suppliers that I have used:
    David Silver Spares https://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB550F2-SUPER-SPORT-1977/
    4into1   https://4into1.com/cb550f-super-sport-550-four-1977/?sort=featured&page=3

Search on this site for the Honduran transistorized ignition. I've installed 2 and they've been trouble free and take the headache out of the points ignition.
Also look into his fuse-box replacement/upgrade to get blade-style fuses instead of the hard to find glass tube type.

Howdy Tony and welcome aboard.
The 550 is a fun bike to ride.
What is it about the wire harness you want to change to the 21st century? You said you are restoring it..... Or are you chop/cafe the bike and changing the whole electronics???

Yes, Hondaman.  :o Sorry 'bout that. (Although, to be fair, the Honduran ignition may be a great device as well...  ;D)

You can read about it here but you have to send email to discuss & order: http://sohc4shop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=32
He's got the contact info on the page.

Cheers

Thanks everyone, No i'm not chopping or cafe racer it just the original wiring loom has a lot of very brittle wires, plus i got electronic ignition for it so i thought it might be worth upgrading the wiring harness.

Welcome from Lake Superior,

Switched my 550F from point to electronic ignition.  It is nice not having to worry about points.

Understand that.

There is a new aftermarket harness available. I just saw it on ebay in Canada. The listing says it is for the 1975-77 CB550F. (Just make sure before pulling your harness off to double check each connector and wire color compared to your harness and make notes of any color changes there might be.
