ARD Set up.
« on: February 09, 2021, 11:44:32 AM »
Enclosed are some pics of and ARD set up that came with a cb750 I just purchased. It is not a magneto. It is a magnet triggered electronic distributer of the bosch variety. No ignition coil. Just the wires you see. And the toggle switch mounted. I have no info on this. Looking for installation info. And hopefully who made it. And any other info.Thanks.

Have you tried mounting that on a bike? There may not be enough carb clearance

It appears to be an ARD magneto unit that someone later converted to a distributor setup. Air cooled VW distributors were common.  Yes carb clearance issues came to mind here too, but for a turbo setup, no problem there.

To my in knowledge, ARD never offered a distributor version of their unit, just the tractor magneto version.  Neat though.

You might get some benefit out of the installation instructions for an RC distributor ignition. That was an angled drive unit off the crank.

Sorry for not responding sooner, I was looking at the pics on my little iphone's screen and couldn't see what was going on. ARD made several variants, and while that could be one they made, I think someone above hit the nail on the head when he suggested it's an old magneto type one, that someone's (quite skilfully) grafted a Bosch electronic distributor into.

Providing that it fits, it'll need a suitable coil, but shouldn't be too hard to time. One of the drawbacks of ARD's is that you couldn't adjust the ignition timing on the older ones, so were set at full advance, which is fine for a drag bike, but not so good on a street bike, especially if you were one of those "Kick start only" guys. Personally, I'd sell it, someone on Ebay will want it for his "Mancave/showbike" and pay you enough money to buy a Dyna 2000 setup, which will work way better.

You've just reminded me that I've got two Kawasaki Z1/KZ900/1000 ARD's here, I must sell them to pay for some recent bike purchases. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Hello Terry,

Thanks for the get back. Kinda my suspicions confirmed. I looked on the dyna web site and they list the 2000 series ignition for the twin cam 750 only.  Maybe you can supply me some further specific info on the 2000 for the single cam 750. I think it is something I want to further persue. Thanks man.

Sincerly yours,

Pat
