Diagram of order for torquing head bolts 77 cb550k
« on: February 25, 2021, 06:47:59 AM »
I am looking for a diagram of the order for torquing head bolts and replacing valve cover on 77 cb550k.  I have the original service manual but I couldn't find the order in there.

Awesome thank you.  This is a much more complete service manual than the one I have.

You need the WORKSHOP manual not the SERVICE manual and read it carefully before fitting cam cover or you will bend valves and break guides

No, that's the service manual that I linked.

The technique is referred to as the "rubber band trick". Use the forum search function and you'll find a bunch of references and descriptions of it (include the quotation marks so the search is for the complete phrase).

In short, you use rubber bands over the top of the valve cover, the end loops of the rubber bands go down through the tappet-cover holes and the wrap around the valve lifters. This holds them up, away from the valve stems in order to keep them from binding as the cover is being maneuvered into position.

It is also important to fully back-out the valve adjuster (the nut-screw combo) so that there is the maximum possible clearance between the lifter and the stem.

Cheers

Bryan,

I am not familiar with the two different manuals and have just normally used the service manuals. Could you explain the differences and where the workshop manuals are normally found.

They are all downloadable from this site, may be labled service and workshop plus come in many parts. Start with 500 and any later models are in supplements

The ones i find linked on this site are the service manuals. Unless he is calling them the workshop manual? Ive searched and not sure what the workshop manual is. Ive printed off the service manual already

when torquing the head dont torque those two 6mm bolts at the front and rear of the head, just nip them down and check them after a couple of heat cycles, also with the rocker cover dont use a torque wrench just hand tighten them down, they strip so easy.

The std procedure is tighten from middle and out in small steps. That cover most heads right?

Example:
If I'll tighten to 25Nm, I start with 5, then 10, 15, 20, 25. This to avoid bending the head. MLS has no flex compared to fiber gasket.
