Does anyone rivet 630 chain and how?
« on: February 24, 2021, 08:49:54 AM »

If you rivet your 630 chain what tooling do you use? I can't find anything on the market for larger than 530 - which is why I guess, many bikes are converted to run 530. Thanks for any suggestions...

There are 630 endless chain and 630 rivet links on ebay.
Ball peen hammer works.

They are really hard to rivet with a tool. The ball peen Hamer would be the best bet as long as you take you time. Maybe take a drift a round off the end to fit in the link. If you can I would try and convert to a 530 chain and sprockets. The last 630 chain I installed was on a Z1900. After that I said not again. The chains have come a long way since the 70's. Most modern bikes run 530 chains with double the HP that these bikes ran. I always get the X-chains which are far better than the O-Rings chain.

Very true, 100hp sportbikes are using 520 chains these days. I'll be converting my CB750K8 to 530 when I've got it together that far. No need to carry on as Honda intended with the strong, light chains out there today.

Less drag too.

Are you disinterested in clip style master links?

3 years ago, I bought 88 links endless DID 630 chain for my K7 750. It was my first experience with Honda SOHC.
I did it because sprockets did not show any wear. I had to replace stock as it was rusty and some O rings were broken.
But now I regret, simply 630 chain is terrible, heavy, stiff, simply monster for this bike. Next time (if it comes one day) I'll convert to smaller one for sure

630 chain is certainly mega-over kill but it does work and last a long, long time when cleaned and serviced regularly. I have been running one rust free for 50,000 miles and replaced it about 15,000 miles ago as it was binding too much. It still has the original rear sprocket! One thing is for sure, it will never snap and take out the cases, the other thing is these bikes are by nature slow, heavy, and clumsy (but attractive) pigs so a slight acceleration improvement really matters not to me. They are retro cool and the chain selection does not change that. If the installed 630 chain and sprockets are good, at this point ride them out and spend the money on oil, filters or brewskis. It is what it is LOL. You can always use a clip master link, I have also used a chain rivet tool on the 630s in the past.

So I think I'll keep the 630 o ring and use a clip type master link. I have new sprockets at both ends already. The old guy style riding I'll be doing on this bike won't stress out the chain.

Turns out there was a Honda service tool updated at the K6 release which is detailed in the service manual supplement for K6 (tool 07975 -3000002) and will do the 630 - I found the previous version on ebay - maybe the later one will show up. Service manual also has a detailed review of how to use it - shoulda rtfb I guess. Thanks.

I have never had a clip link come off however you could do this as an extra measure. You can see that 50,000 mile rear sprocket in the picture LOL
