Brake line kit
« on: February 28, 2021, 03:10:14 PM »
Anybody used  Make Your Own hydraulic hose brake line kit and would recommended it?  I remember seeing sets of 10mm banjos and way to put them together.

Suggestions?

I made lines from Earl's speed flex for my '82 Suzuki GS1100E, and will be making the lines for my CB750 soon.  It's not too difficult, maybe there are better alternatives but it did the job for me.

I used Russell lines and fittings.  You can buy them from Jegs or Summit racing.  I used -3 AN line and 10mm banjos.  The caliper adapter was an Earls item as Russell didn't have one.  It is a 10mm - 1.25 to -3 AN fitting Earls part number EAR-592035ERL.

If you are not looking for NOS hoses, go to Raymond, at APEX BRAKES. He has been making hoses for my bikes and race cars for years. Flawless workmanship, lots of colour options, and perfect fit. Price is less than buying the bits too!

I made my first ones in 1977 ..or thereabouts.
 It's not hard, several advantages....
Exact length ... no inch longer or inch shorter than would ideal.
If at one point in time , you want a shorter line, you can make it out of a longer one. Or change a straight end to a 45 or 90...vs buying another line .   and waiting for it to arrive.
Did I mention I hate banjo ends, and crimped fitting lines.. and double hate a double banjo line...
And don't even get me started on a U shaped line going over the front fender from one calibre to the next..  looks like tractor plumbing.. ...
So yeah . Build your own..get exactly  what you want..

Thank you, guys.

So if I understand it correctly.  I use the AN system to make the hose and there are 10mm AN banjos , too.   To connect to the caliper I go with regular 10MM banjo bolt?

This is for the sidecar plumbing from the rear brake on Red, I also need to install a quick and dry disconnect.

Quick disconnect dont work on brakes as they always introduce air, on a pumped hydraulic system that dont matter but brakes!!!

I don't like to use banjos at the caliper.  There is a fitting that is m10-1.25 on one end and -3AN on the other.  This is the Earls Performance part # EAR-592035ERL. AN fittings are a standard hose, thread and fiare size.  So any -3AN line can connect to any -3AN fitting as long as one is male and the other female.  It sounds more confusing than it is.  The banjos should be 10mm or 3/8.  Honda used m10-1.25 banjo bolts for the master cylinder and the brake light switch.  The CB750 calipers also have m10-1.25 line and bleeder threads.  Here is what it looks like with the Earls fitting in the caliper and the braided line connected.

Staubli makes brake line quick disconnects that do not introduce any air or require bleeding the system again. They are spendy at about $300 for the male/female set. Very popular with guys who want to be able to swap complete calipers quickly at the track. Or for those who want some "race cred".
