New Spokes for K0 Wheels
« on: February 19, 2021, 08:31:15 AM »
Searching for spoke sets for my ‘69 K0. General consensus for Sandcast is the nipples should be “gold”. All the spoke sets I have (and used in the past) are “silver”. Anyone have a source that comes with gold/ yellow plated nipples?

Will the originals  clean up somewhat ?
ANY  non original parts won't helpthe value of the bike any..

Won't hurt to post a measurement   including diameter, or you end up with gold ones that are not quite right..

I still have a half bag of original Torrington nipples for Schwinn and other makes. They are from the 40,s or 50,s , but the correct long 2 flat nipples...... they sell like crazy when I put them up for sale, because they are very hard to find..

Thanks for the links, all. I’m definitely trying to keep the bike original. Tank will get some “dent Dr.” But then I plan on scrubbing, polishing and re using all the original “body work”. Having said that, the wheels need help. Bearings, Spokes and tires for sure. I want to ride this thing. Anything that connects my butt to the road is getting done.

Original spokes were steel with a clear zinc plating on them that gave a very slight blue tint. The spoke nipples were also steel with zinc...but it was a yellow zinc. You can always add a yellow chromate to any clear-zinced part you buy with this:

Which models had yellow nipples?
I did not have that in my mind when I replaced both rims with spokes on my K6 early 80's.

My K2 build got the spokes with yellow nipples from Germany. I thought that was the original look.

Apparently the Sandcast needs to have yellow cad nipples.....

Not cad. Zinc. At least thats how all of the sandcasts I have owned have been. I think Honda started using cad plating in the early 80s.

Sam..... My mistake. Thanks for the correction. In my research, I watched and read about the restoration of #538. Truly outstanding work! Yourlast picture reminded me of my first and only visit to a  concours event. Mr. Hooker was there too!

Vintagecb750.com sells spoke kits with gold nipples.

Alternatively, you could get the originals replated in yellow gold zinc Scarborough by H & E Plating. They just did a batch for me (bright silver for my batch).

James.....I’ll check again, I thought their CB750 Spokes were all silver? Thanks!

The ones I got for my 75F have gold nipples.

The plating route is also an option but it would much more expensive because the minimum charge is $150, and you probably couldn't find enough pieces that require the yellow plating to make it cost worthy.

It was for me because I got my pieces plated in silver zinc

The spoke sets from Germany are really nice quality. The zinc finish on the spokes are beautiful (very shiny/bling). Just be warned, the nipples aren't identical to the OEM Honda items. They're missing the additional ‘top hat/nipple’ where the spoke enters the nipple. So for a bike lil you're sandie personally I’d get the original nipples / spokes related and the nipplea gold passivated.

cb750.com front spoke nipples for a 750 a are gold and have the correct shape. at $40 a set  not so bad, they come with a washer for the aluminum rim. Can't say for sure about the length of the spokes.

Caswell has the yellow chromate converter for $35 a bottle. Now I want to find the correct shape.  It appears the cb750A and gl1000 spokes are a different part number so length is a question, I don't think the aluminum hub is dropped center like the steel ones are.

Don..... let me know if that Caswell product does the job.

A few years ago, I bought several bikes at once. Lots of parts came with the deal. I went through the spoke bin today, and found what I need!!

Looks like Yamiya's kit now has yellow zinc:

https://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_251_184_87&products_id=3036

Ive used these in my restorations. Super close to the originals.

Yamiya's look like the ones I've used except they lack the rounded end. I was hoping to find oem appearance but even newer Honda spokes aren't sandcast correct.
I need to dig through the K0 totes myself. I'm sure I bought a full set last time and have one or another end left, Sandcast style nipples too.

Are these the same item. Off a 500. Probably should be zinc? $150 for the replating, cheaper than 2 sets of spokes.
