I think a revamp on the search would be nice.

How about moving the project threads to a new section?

I agree there is a lot of 'noise' on this forum. But we can not all be 'perfect'  techies.

I wade though the 'unread' topics and if I find the subject interesting I'll open it to have a look. I don't mind answering the same question over and over. 10 years ago when I discovered sohc4@dorje.com I asked the same stupid questions I am now answering. Don't forget there are a numer of us on this list that ride and maintian these bikes for over 10 years, I for one am happy to help. Just bring beer whenever you come to Brussels :)

I see no need other than a classification SOHC4 non-SOHC4 something we had on sohc4@dorje.com for some time.

One other thing to keep in mind. It's not unusual for a thread to wander across multiple topics once it starts. It may start out about carbs, then someone, a half dozen replies later steers it towards electrical issues. How would/should that one be classified? I would hate to have to get into splitting threads to properly classify them into more finite categories.

Isn't that what moderators are for? ;)

I agree about splitting the tech forum into subcategories. It will make it much more tidy.

My personal thought is ... the fewer the forum "folders" the better.
and you call yourself a techy...
but, perhaps the techy is for bikes and techie is for computers  ;)

just looked up both...
techy: easily irritated or annoyed; "an incorrigibly fractious young man"

Techie is a term, derivative of the word technology, for a person who displays a great, sometimes even obsessive, interest in technology, as well as high-tech devices, particularly computers. Some techies express a disregard for any technology that could possibly be considered obsolete, even if the technology or process in question might only be considered obsolete within the techie community. Consequently, techies are also often early adopters. With the increased spending power of techies, a few media outlets exist that cater solely to them, most notably Wired, Slashdot, and, while it existed, TechTV. Geeks or nerds are often also considered to be techies; however, the reverse is not necessarily true and more people who would not be considered "geeks" are becoming techies, especially with the advancement of technology in recent years.

Another possible and less common use of the word is as a replacement of the description of a person as ignorant, especially when technology of some kind is involved. For instance, consider a person who believes that he or she knows the proper way of performing something (with technology, like creating a circuit board.) However, he or she actually does not know how to properly perform the task, but is unwilling to listen to suggestions from more knowledgeable people. This person could be considered a "techie." The tone of the word is similar to that of "geek" or "nerd."

so?  techy?  which is it?

I'm with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" contingency.

But then again, I do like to go to the garage and tinker with my bikes even if they're running just fine... :-\

"I'm with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" contingency."  <------ Hell yeah....couldnt agree more!

Been thinking about this since my last post and the best way to get rid of ALOT of junk on this site is figure out a way to block guys from doing ridiculous one word posts or guys who want to drive their post counts up by just piping in to say they agree  or posting tons of crap in the open forum etc....

Best suggestion I could make would be to allow guys like me who do a ton of reading (and relatively little posting) and utilize the "show new unread posts" links to filter out everything but the tech info so I don't have to review those few guys who feel the need to pipe in on every single post in the humour thread 27 times!!!

lol.

just kidding :)

Perhaps daughter boards that cannot have NEW topics posted in them. Take posts from this forum if they are particularly insightful, or had good questions with good answers, move them there, and of course allow new posts made in those topics.
This way, gems could continue on in their helpfulness, with new information, questions pertaining to the subject, etc, with a tidy list of topics that you know will be helpful.
All others stay here. Doens't mean they aren't useful, just not as focused or helpful as these really good ones...

Just a thought.
No.

Heffay,   ;D ;D  Actually I designed guidance systems for missiles for 34 years so electronics
is my forte.  I am an early adopter.....still possessing a first year Betamax video recorder, an
eight track recorder...you get the idea. I have backed off a little and will wait a few months
for Windows Vista to stabilize.  :o  Having said that, I buy stuff based on the science rather
than the sales pitch.....example being granite base record turntables and speaker wire with
arrows pointing to the end to install on the speakers.

I am generally not afraid to tear anything apart if there is at least a 50 percent chance I can
get it back together.....electronics or machinery.  I believe some of the discussions on these
forums are based on achieving the last 1 percent of performance....maybe the oil discussion
fell in this category.  ;D

So do I qualify as a "techy" on not?  :-\
