Dusty Cafe' in the Corner
« on: February 22, 2007, 05:56:36 PM »
A motorcycle enthusiast I've known for years always shows-up w/ an interesting bike; a new CBR1000, a CBX-6, VFR1000 and a couple others. Today I was at his house, and in his 2 car garage in the corner (under lawn furniture etc) was a dusty CB750 K1 that didn't look too stock; Morris mags, plastic race tail, lo-bars, orange paint, menacing black headers, chrome bits, unusual carbs etc. He tells me he bought new in 1971,  its got Yoshimura pistons, head work, the whole 9 yards. Hasn't been touched in 10-15  years or so. MMMmmm...I'm kinda looking to build a cafe racer, so I give him the old, "you wanna sell it?" His reply.."Yeah, maybe...I've just too many projects right now..."

K1 has a FULL-RACE YOSH MOTOR, MORRIS MAGS, TRIPLE DISCS, AND ONLY 10,000 MILES! Untouched and garaged for about 25 years! Not mine YET but negotiations sound positive.

Sure could use those gauges. Have I told you how much I enjoy having you here? BTW, I thought the yosh pipe had more of a round bend in front of the engine?

Its finally in my garage tonight. That Yosh motor will roar again but I'm going to tidy things up a bit first. Its the basis of the cafe I've always wanted to build.

Very cool!!! So what did you have to give for a bike with all the good sh!t already there? I even scoped dual disc front end.........if you got that for less than $1500....you did good.

It was twice that, but it wasn't actually for sale, so I feel very fortunate.  Don't forget, its got an all-out soup-to-nuts Yoshimura motor from the 70's, not just a big-bore. Heres a rough mock-up of how its coming together...I pulled the carbs, cables, etc, yanked the Kerker and threw on that nasty hand-bent Yosh pipe and the Dunstall fairing. I need rear-sets, clubmans, fork brace, a complete going over and strip-down and I'm doing it right. Its got potential.

Check it out; after a totally one-track-mind week of thrashing details, this bike is coming together and totally RIPS! And its street-legal!
Amazingly, after a total carb rebuild, I set-up the sync gauges and it DID NOT NEED ADJUSTING! Good kharma.
I feel like 18 years old again; this is what I always wanted to do with a 4 cylinder.

It's different I'll give you that ;D

Some nice details on there too, like the turned around front forks and the rear disc set up. It probably needs a decent brake set up if that Yoshi motor is still packing all it's horses :o

What's that back wheel from, is it a 16" or are the photos just making it look small?

16" Morris mag rear w/ a GT501 Dunlop 130/90-16 and Lockhead caliper clamping a Honda disc. Its actually the same diameter as an 18" w/ that really meaty tire.
Rigged a V45 Magna master on the fronts which is angled for pullback stock bars so it sits nice on clubmans, plus its a nice low-profile master cylinder w/ not much wiggle room to spare; it stops better than the usual single CB750 set-up I'm used to.

That is one tuff looking motor scooter!  Are you going to do anything to preserve the pipe? ceramic coat, paint etc?

I really need someone to make reproductions of the yosh pipes.  That would be an interesting business venture, you should look into making copies and sell em like hotcakes. ;D.............. Seriously.

Got back from Laconia NH today. 1000  miles, cruised on hwy at 80 mph, hit 125 mph a few times in the White Mountains in NH, led a group of bros all day ( 2 are cops and they FLY on a ZX12 and a new BMW K1200S) on their modern sportbikes thru all the best twisties anywhere 250 mile ride, at first they joked about "waiting-up" for me, I totally suprised everybody especially after a few 100 mph sweepers w/ me in the lead (I know those roads after a dozen trips to bike wknd), the bike walks the walk, and talks the talk. I was flat-out at every opportunity. Flawless handling (not 1 wobble or weave EVER), pulled hard thru all the gears, bike was spanked thoroughly all wknd. I have a bit of a wild streak. What a blast.
Best motorcycle I've ever owned. My CBX was a bit faster but this thing HANDLES! Seat was ultra-comfy, wind protection superb, DIDN'T LEAK 1 DROP OF OIL (used 1 qt), no major glitches (front signals vibrated off a couple times), had a flat rear tire 2 blocks from a Harley shop at 4 in the afternoon on Friday, and they had a 16" tube (of course). I removed gas tank, laid bike on its side on some cardboard boxes (no centerstand), yanked the wheel, handed him the wheel, he fixed it in 10 minutes w/o waiting, I quickly re-installed wheel. All this took less than 1 hour from when I discovered flat till the time I was back on the road. I thought at first my wknd was absolutely kaput and would need a trailer home. Brought about 10 pounds of tools, and needed most.
And the YOSH pipe HOWLED ALL DAY!

glad you had a win mate, and you are right these old girls handle just fine, i still say a great rider on and older bike will go faster than a bad rider on a good bike... just ask my mate on an sv650 that couldnt catch me up our local twisty hills.... to say he was a little miffed was an understatement.... what other planes have you got for the bike?... looking good...
