Sorting the stuff,
« on: March 15, 2021, 05:31:07 PM »
I did some shop cleaning today and realized a few former projects have left partial engines in the rack taking a lot of space. I bought a low mile F2 motor that was apart, I bought 5 1/2 750's from a guy a few years ago and have several half engines, I've taken a couple frozen ones apart, the k4 motor out of my diecast that had stuck valves due to plugged exhaust, the 1124 stroker with the tight spot in it, A k2 that had the drive chain mostly inside the transmission, etc. Two empty frames in storage and one at my brothers garage, I'll never build them all especially if I find more K0's. At least I determined what's there and assembled the potential good parts motors into groups.

Don.... at one point, I had seven frames hanging in the barn, motors everywhere, and two rolling parts bikes. Sell some stuff, you’ll feel better!

Cleaning the shop always sounds like a good idea, until you start doing it. That's when you find all this other stuff that you always meant to do that you still don't  have the time or energy to do it , even though it is do able. Perhaps your interest has changed or has been more focused lately. Maybe it's a pressing feeling about time, that doesn't make much sense considering how much extra time we have all had this past year, but really hadn't spent  real quality time putting together these things we love.
I have been feeling "lost ",even "blocked" in my shop lately too. I have a rebuilt 550 engine sitting on a shelf for 2 years that was supposed to upgrade a completed 500, 4 - 500 engines that need rebuild but for some reason just haven't started working on any of them, a  complete 72' 450 with ample parts to completely rebuild and it just sits there whining, and a 83 550 /83 650 engine upgrade that has been on the lift all year. I walked into the shop a few times hoping a clean and organize session will give me the energy to find my way back....hasn't taken hold yet for some reason.
I guess we all need to know that we are prepared for the day when we decide that "today's the day" when that day comes.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

A bit morbid, but about 6 months ago I said to myself.

If I dropped dead tomorrow. Whats all the stuff I have thats worth a bit of money, not much though
that would other wise end up getting thrown away.
I've been selling my bits and pieces slowly and anything that I can't sell ,I'll throw away myself.
I wish I had more valuable stuff. :(

Ken..... well said. I agree, and after a few years of that attitude, my shop is cleaner and my real projects moving ahead nicely.

Agreed, I don't want to saddle my family someday with the things that only I can make sense of. And having 6 or 7 windjammer brackets makes no sense at all. Even less sensible is having 5 loose windjammers, including Kawasaki lowers.

Because of multiple cross-country moves over the past 20 years, I have never been able to build up a really substantial cache of bikes or bike parts, and that's honestly probably a good thing.

However, a couple of years ago I did go through all my boxes of parts and cataloged them, and in the process discovered I had bought many parts over the years that I already owned. I also gave away several redundant parts for the cost of shipping, and threw out many more parts that should never have been kept.

It's good to take stock, occasionally. Know what you have and get rid of what you don't need.

So true! I went through my parts the other day and realized I have already bought three items for my latest project, that I already had!

Don please list that stuff over at http://www.vetterowners.com/
You'd be amazed. But not the lowers, pm sent.

1124 stroker 😳
It's time for professional help with the 1124,  the engine has a tight spot that I can't seem to find the cause of.  I dial indicated the crank, it's not bent and put in new bearings still has a tight spot, a clue might be even with a new kick start mechanism. I still can't kick it even with the plugs out.  The bike seems to have been wrecked backwards or hit from behind. the footpegs were bent forwards I'm looking for the late owners partner.

I can't even give stuff away. Some day I'll blow a cork and set myself free of the things that I won't use. Walnecks swap meet?

Don..... I guess we’re all the pretty much the same, to some extent or another.

1. Several years ago (after I bought the “Pickering” bikes and really got into a storage issue) I changed some habits and have kept this routine going. Started an EBay and PayPal accounts. Listed one of everything I had two of...... stuff really started selling and my PayPal account filled up. Now when I order new stuff, it feels “Free”.

2. Put all the broken and “rebuildable” crap in a local “free scrap bin”. Including that carton of the +50 brake, tach, speedo cables you’ve replaced in the past 20 years..... really?

3. Toughest Decision: Future Projects. I had way too many and they prevented me from jumping on stuff I stumbled onto (like the chopper/ Sandcast combo). I had more than I would ever have completed. Moved out 75% of what I had. How many cb750’s do you really need? Sell a couple of KO’s and really focus on one?

4. Good Luck! I still have three cb750’s I restored (K6,7,8)and never ride. Determined to move at least a couple  this Spring.....

I finally got a check in the mail from an old timer Pontiac guy for a set of headers that won't fit my chassis. He's reluctant to reply to messages or give needed info but I was patient and it came this week.
Now I'll ship the headers and a set of lowers to a member monday am.

I was going to donate some metal to a local scrap yard startup until a load of dirt and rocks fell off one of their overloaded not tarped scrap trucks and broke our windshield. Big trash day just happened and the pickers got most of it.
