Wheels for 78
« on: March 16, 2021, 12:17:28 PM »
I want to go from Spokes to Mags. Any cb750 years fit ?  Is there anything to know before buying some eBay used wheels?  I hate spokes

Remember 77 and 78 used 17 inch wheels in the back. You are the first antispokite I have read here

Yeah, me too!  I dont know if i hate spokes so much as i hate cleaning them.  And chromed steel rim with poorly plated spokes just turned into a dusty, rusty, not round, heavy mess.  One area where Honda really cheaped out, in my opinion.

Lots of wheel swaps doable.  Some of them are gonna require real savvy when it comes to what forks, swingarms, and wheel spacers get you what you need.  Or be on the lookout for some Lester or other aftetmarket designed to bolt right on.

One of my K7 projects had reverse Comstars on it when I bought it.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what Honda they were from, but I traded them to Pielz for the spoke wheels on his K7.
Here you can see them on his bike.

It was a direct swap, same size wheels, spacers, and everything.

Spokes break and require tubes. No thanks.  Mag all day.  Plus mags are waaaay better looking.

Unfortunately, 75 percent or so of the mags that can be fit to your bike also require inner tubes.  I love the look of cast alloy and mag wheels, but also nothing better than some wide aluminum rims with heavy duty spokes...super strong, super light, build 'em right and spokes ain't gonna break.

Kids with their stock spoked steel wheels where they slather everything in black paint/powder?...come on guys lets not do that anymore

77 and 78  F models had Honda mags.... they are not the prettiest, 1/2 steel. Cheap to buy .
T o put them on earlier models you need to  change the forks, and setup rear for disc...

(Drum brake rear) Comstars from a 78 CB750A will bolt on to your K8 with no mods. My understanding is the bare hubs were all the same, so use all your brake and drive side stuff, axle and spacers. Front should bolt on & go.

Dealer take-off new rear wheel: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1978-Honda-CB750A-CB750-Auto-Rear-Wheel-Rim-w-Bridgestone-Super-Speed-21-r2/360694823189?epid=1529954228&hash=item53fb163915:g:lYQAAMXQXZZRfSHg

Cheap & dirty rear wheel: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-honda-cb750-a-hondamatic-rear-wheel-rim/264978265887?hash=item3db1ef771f:g:vwcAAOSwQrpf2Ty0

Cheap & dirty front, same seller, maybe same bike:

And a less dirty front:

I have Comstars on Red, very happy with them.  I installed NAPA valves 90426 and run them tubeless.

These 18”/19” Lester’s came on my K8. They worked really well on it for years (K8 sprocket hub lines the chain up perfectly). Moved them to the K3 +5 years ago. Bolted in a valve stem and run them tubeless.

Something i found recently.  You could also tap the wheel with 1/4" NPT and use water tank valve.

I used bolt ins from a local speed shop. Leaves the valve hole unmarked (rubber gasket on both sides of the hole) so I can still use a tube if needed. They also are cranked out at 45 degrees that makes filling and pressure checks a dream!

I use these, but the 45 degree valve would come handy.  Do you have a part number?

You guys rock. Should I just wait and get stuff to make rear disc and do forks too?  I’m kind of digging the modern fork look.  Just never done anything like that before.

That all depends on what you want to spend and how soon you want to ride. Do you have access to a lathe to make custom spacers?

I used fork and swingarm from F3 to build Red, some frame customization was needed, but the brakes can run circles around the K0 brakes.
