Chain maintenance was much easier with old style of chain with a clip. Not riveted.

Lift bike so rear wheel can rotate, and use brush soaked in a good detergent while wheel is spinning.

With a little work to the front sprocket you are able to use an "O" ring chain. The front sprocket is wider through the center than it is at the teeth. If you machine one side flat and install the sprocket with the flat outward the retaining bolts will draw the sprocket away from the case enough for an "O" ring chain to fit. I average 10k to 14k miles on my CB500K2 with very little maintenance.

If you do that, I would advise to shim the rear sprocket outward the same amount to keep the chain in line, or the chain will wear faster. 10 to 14k miles with an o-ring chain isn't very good, I do a regular 25k miles with the x-ring on a 140hp bike!
