Cb350f tappet Adjustment question
« on: March 27, 2021, 09:38:56 AM »
Hey everyone,

I have this weird phenomenon when I adjust my tappets. when I put my  .002 feeler it feels very tight if I really squeeze in a .003 and then go back to a .002 It feels so much looser should I just adjust my gap as is or put in the .003 and then go to .002

You want some friction but not tight.

Right I get that and when I put the .002 in there initially it will be tight I can actually pull up on the tap with my fingers and it will become looser the same effect happens if I shove a .003 in there the tap it now is so much looser and the .002 feels like nothing when before there was friction on it

It’s hard to describe but I will articulate better.

When first adjusting the tappets I have to use some force and slide my .002 feeler in. It will feel very tight however, if I put a .003 in as much as it can it feels like it’s lifting the rocker arm up alittle so then when I put my .002 in it has a lot more space.

In fact I know this to be true because If I go back and fourth with my .002 after the .003 I can feel the rocker arm clamping down on the .002 and it gets tighter again..

So my question is is this normal?
Should I do adjustments based off of where the rocker arm sits at naturally or when it’s all the way up?

Check feeler with micrometer if you want.
You want slight friction, not tight.

When you adjust the tappets for the first time on a SOHC/4 it can be a bit nerve racking if you haven't done it before.. I know it was for me personalty. When i'd finished the first time I double and triple checked the clearances were ok and the adjuster nuts tightened. After about the third time I did them I was a lot more relaxed and at the end just double checked the locking nuts before refitting the caps

Do as 69cb750 stated if you are concerned about the feeler gauges.

I put a bend in the correct feeler finger and cut the tip narrower to be able to get in under the adjuster, that made it a lot easier to insert and feel.
