Alternator wiring
« on: April 17, 2021, 08:57:26 AM »
I have by accident cut the 3 yellow wires from the alternator going to the rectifier. Got a new wireset, but now I don't know which yellow wire that matches the rectifier. Thankful for any help to solve my problem :)

Thanks for replies. Since this issue is not why the battery is not charging, what would be the next things to check? (the battery was charging before I started fiddling with the 3 yellow wires)

Check battery voltage at 1000 rpm and 4000 rpm, report back here.
How old is battery ?

Most common fault is a bad connector, possibly bad rectifier rarely bad regulator

Electrics not being my strong point ;) how do I go about testing the rectifier?

When you have connected the three yellow wires again, I'd first check for charging.
Start engine.
Connect voltmeter to battery terminals.
Read voltage at 1200 rpm and then at let's say 3000-4000 rpm. Voltage should not exceed 15V.
An even easier test is: Start engine and switch on the headlight. Bring your left hand in front of the headlight and then increase rpm. When brightness headlight increases with rpm, battery gets charged. Simple.
Rectifiers rarely fail. Just don't reverse polarity.
BTW, have you managed to set the ignition timing yet?

Have managed to set the timing now, but I had to turn the baseplate counterclockwise to the limit to see the firing mark. I guess the firing mark should appear somewhat in the center of the slot. I could have missed one notch on the cam when I assembled the cam/chain. Or, there is excessive slack in the chain. There was a bit of play when wiggled on the cam. I suppose that when you turn the crank, there should be direct response oh the cam? (excuse my bad english, it's not my native language)

If you have readjusted the breakerpoints so they have the correct gap, you will - as a consequence - have the plates almost in the middle of the adjusting range (see mine below). My experience is limited to OEM parts though.

Cam timing has no effect on points(ignition) timing
