handlebar control locating pin Q?
« on: April 02, 2021, 12:36:47 PM »
Has anyone ever replaced / repaired one? My bike probably had aftermarket bars at some point and the locating pins are missing in the controls.  I tried to pull a pin from a newer control with no luck. Seems to be a design change.

I just grind them off or remove them. They are a  nuisance when wanting to swap handle bars. I you want though you can make a locating pin out of a suitably sized role pin.

I don't like my mirror moving around when it gets bumped.  This just in, I did find an early control with broken clutch adjuster threads, the pin pulled right out, it was obviously pressed in while the newer ones seem to be cast in place. It  is loctited into the left side now.
Answered my own Q? but I'll leave it for reference   Now to see how many old broken controls I can find, I have at least one more bike like this.

I magic markered the tip of the pin, located it the best I could and drilled a hole in the bars when I fit aftermarket bars on y 550K1. also had to put in holes for cables. a good morning's puttering. I used a close drill to the pin diameter, maybe 0.02 over. Feel like the radial location is off a little, but it is good for me.  The bars I chose were much flatter than the originals.

On my'76 CB550 I dremeled slots into the control blocks so I don't need to feed the looms through the handle bars. You have the make the cutouts big enough the wiring in them does no get crushed and short while screw the two control blocks together.t Set up is rock solid and water proof. Also easy peasy to swap bars if I chose to.

Those dog leg levers make operating the clutch and front a lot lot easier.

I'd like a set of those levers for my Hot Rod bike project that's next in line after the gold K0. I went through all of my controls and didn't find any more early lower halves.  I remember saving a pin but it's not in the spot I remember leaving it.
Keep the tips coming, I appreciate it.

Don.... if you need more pins, I have a box of busted controls. Could probably dig out a few extra.

Awesome, let me check. I'm sure I could use one or two.

I tapped the hole for m6 threads, and cut the head off of a bolt and slotted it so I could screw it in. Worked great.
