I am preparing to pull the engine from a 78 K8 frame. The engine is not going to go back into this frame, it’s going into my wife’s custom trike frame. I am looking at how much clearance there is above the engine, between it and the frame, and I’m looking at how much below the engine the oil pan sits, and it doesn’t look like there’s any way this engine can come out without taking off the oil pan.

Am I crazy? Is this going to work, or is taking off the oil pan considered normal for taking the engine out of the frame? Obviously I can’t remove the valve cover while it’s in the frame to get any additional clearance (uncut stock K8 frame).

I've never taken the oil pan off when I've removed my engine.

How the hell does it clear the bottom of the frame?  I’ve got maybe 3/4” clearance at the top between the frame and the valve cover. The pan is 1-1/2” below the top of the bottom frame tubes. My math says I need another 3/4” inch of magical clearance to lift this engine and get it over the bottom frame tubes.

Full disclosure. Never done it before.

Is the trick that the rear of the motor actually lifts up more than the front as you lift and slide it out?  I’m just laying here on the ground next to this thing trying to imagine how it’s going to work. Kind of want to have a plan before I invite 3 or 4 buddies over to do this.

Don’t wanna look like I haven’t a clue what I’m doing. Haha.

1 You dont have to but its a heavy lump and if you are on your own taking it, the top breather cover and oil filter off makes it a little bit easier.
2 it doesnt lift straight out sideaays you have to twist the engine

Excellent advice. I won’t be doing it myself, but I certainly don’t want to make it harder than it needs to be. I assumed that removing the oil filter was a given. I’ll definitely remove the breather cover too, to get a little more space.

By “twist the engine“ I’m thinking you must mean to rotate it in order to lift the rear some. Looking at it, I can see how that’s going to be necessary.

Thank you!

By the way, I am also a Bryan J. I almost feel like I’m thanking myself.

Forgot to say if you have the later engine with studs for holdinexhaust to head its worth getting those out so you dont trap fingers between stud and frame

All they said was “it was between ‘Scott’ and ‘Bryan’, and we knew a ‘Scott’ who was a dick, so you got ‘Bryan’”.

No oil drain plug to avoid scratching the frame. Plug out when draining the oil.
Oil filter off, exhaust spigots/studs off.
Front lower right attachment can hook into eachother. Frame has a irritating lip.

You want the pan on, you can probably break a pump, setting engine down too hard or on something
Not only do the ehaust studs hit your fingers, they scratch up the frame . You can leave the poit side ones on i think, but wont hurt to put gas line hose over them.l
