Sandcast #1722
« on: April 06, 2021, 05:14:21 PM »
My friend Leroy bought this a couple of weeks ago from the fellow that bought it new. It was "semi-restored" a few years ago by the owner and his pals. It was in very nice shape but Leroy wanted me to make it look a little nicer. I didn't do a whole lot to it, new gators, rubbed out the frame paint, cleaned the carbs, changed the back tire, re-painted the battery box, restored the lower right hand switch housing, re-plated all of the engine hardware and some of the other hardware, cleaned and painted the engine and polished the engine covers. I was able to save all of the original large 8 bolts. Just about all of the original parts are still on the bike. The main thing is the horn, it should be grey I think. It still has the original lotus root pipes and the seat is nos. I think the tins are from Yamia and the seat is nos. I think it turned out nice and I think Leroy is going to sell it, he has four already, including #56. I didn't have to take the engine apart because it runs great.

I used the covers for a mask and cleaned them off after with thinner.

Unmarked pipes.

There is a big ding in one of the pipes.

It's the oil filter housing that came with the bike according to the owner. I couldn't find the grey rubber biscuts that go between the fins but whoever buys it can find them.

I'll have to learn about the gray horn. I have a sandcast and a gray horn but they are not bolted together.

I think #3850 was the last one with a grey horn.

My 12XX looks like the normal horn. Photos of “grey horn”? Other differences? Thanks!

Nice work as always, GUTS. Good to see you here.

For those of you that [prolly] dont know, GUTS restores a lot of Kawasaki Triples as well.  I've seen his work on that forum.
Sandcast aside, SOHC's are a whole lot easier to restore than Kawasaki two strokes  [been there!]

Look at the direction the wires come off it also. Grey horn going on the left side of the bike with the wires to the inside.
