Should I buy?
« on: March 20, 2021, 06:04:02 PM »
Hey guys! Thinking of picking up this 650 tomorrow. Talked to the owner and seems to be in good shape. He lost the carbs and air box in a move.

Thoughts on the price?

I’m currently full re-building a 77 CB550 but it’s long term. Looking for something that is more short term as well.

I'm behind a firewall (at work) that will not let me get to craigslist. Can you post up the pics and the seller's asking price? Depending on year, I may have replacement parts...

$500 doesn't seem like a bad price to me, if you are going to keep the cafe look.
It looks like it started out as an '81 custom, based on the air forks and dual disc front brakes.
If it is, and you buy it, I have an air box that you could have for the cost of shipping, and I may have a carb rack, but if I do, it would need to be cleaned and refreshed.

onepieceatatime that’s awesome to know! I’d be happy to pay! Do you have carbs as well or just the rack? Either is a huge bonus!

Sorry, I meant the whole assembly.
I'll have to check though, I know there is a rack with carb bodies and bowls in my garage, off a parts bike, I just do not know its condition, or if all of the internals are present.

If you are not familiar with the SOHC4 CB650 there were a lot of changes made in the 4 years of (US market) production. It can make finding parts difficult, if you are looking to make it "original".

Off the top of my head:

1979 CB650 only 1 model completely different than other years for US bikes.
1980 CB650 and CB650C Same engine as ’79 different model # on carbs from ’79, but interchangeable.
C has 2” longer forks than standard model, 4 into 4 pipes, Comstar wheels, chrome headlight bucket, different side cover emblems, 40 tooth rear sprocket
Standard model has 4 into 2 pipes, spoke wheels, and black plastic headlight bucket 39 tooth rear sprocket
1981 Different carbs than ’79 and ’80 models carbs not compatible with earlier years. Engine head changed to match carb spacing. The petcock fuel line size changed to match the carbs. Petcock bung size on fuel tank changed too.
C got air assist forks and dual disc front brakes
Standard model otherwise the same as ‘80
’82 standard pretty much the same as ‘81
C discontinued and SC (Nitehawk) introduced

The '81 models had pressed in jets in the carbs, and the '82 had screwed in jets...

Looks like a fine beginning, will you be starting a thread in the Project Shop section?

Looks like it has the carbs on it too, I can pull the airbox parts out of my spares bin this week and get them boxed up. If you need any other parts, let me know and I will check for them when I go through the bin.

I’m not sure? Not super familiar with the 80s bikes (81 CB650C)

onepieceatatime currently missing the following if you have any extra lying around !

OEM air box -Working on jetting with pods as I’m really pushing for a cafe/brat hybrid. But would be really cool to have if I don’t get it to work lol. Right now it starts up like a charm when I lean on the throttle slowly it’s fine but as soon as I rip the throttle it dies. I’m guessing since it’s jetted so lean with the CV carbs I’m going to have to really mess with the jetting. If for some reason you have a set of slide carbs that fit this I’m FOR SURE interested

Gauges - speedo or Tach

Speedo cable

The clutch handle and cable are petty roughed up. Seems like it took a drop at one point.

Let me know if you have anything lying around! Happy to compensate you!

Love the community on here of everyone helping each other bring these bikes back to life and keeping them from a landfill!

Sorry for the delayed reply...
I have a complete factory airbox assembly, minus screws and filter, and a clutch cable.
The only speedo cable I found has a damaged end, and I used the gauges and clutch handle on one of my other bikes.
