I think brazing is much cheaper and doesn't require a super expensive setup. It does the same and looks are of no concern for something like this.

That might work with some applications but you would have to put a lot of heat in the small area to get the bronze to flow
and then maintain that heat to evenly flow the bronze over the cracked area. what is that heat doing to the surrounding area?
Yes this system is very expensive but this is just after my day is over and i can play with my motorcycles and help some people
that might benefit from this type of welding.

That is mighty impressive work there, Jim.  I don't have any carbs with broken float posts, which I almost lament.
But, I do have some where the main jet tower has corroded away and won't capture or seal the main jet anymore.  Do you think you could do a weld build up that would allow re-machining the carb body in that area?

I would have to take some of the old corroded material off to get in some good (yeah right.....good metal in a carburetor?) metal and then build it up from there.
it would be strong enough to re-machine then
how much wall thickness do you think there is from the threads to the out side wall?

you can e-mail me at www.jmfmicroweld@earthlink.net

thanks

Impressive technology!. Will you be posting laser welding pics?

Hope you find more applications than just broken carb float posts. 8)

if you know anything about tool steel welding, that is what my company specializes in

here are some examples

one is made of Beryllium copper and the edge was laser welded with .010 beryllium copper wire

the second one is a 420 Stainless steel insert that was welded using .007 wire

hope these are good examples of what I do every day

the carburetor stuff if play time

enjoy

Beautiful work Jim, I trashed a set of CB750 carbs after busting off a post years ago, so I had to buy another set on Ebay, then with shipping, I spent more than 5 times your repair costs! I might send that busted carb over, if I can find the remains of the post, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. :)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

G'Day Jim, thanks very much for that very generous offer mate, but those carbs are in a million bits now, so I won't waste your time. Have you tried welding any pistons yet though?

I've got a wiseco 836cc piston that some dumb shiite (well me, actually :)) tried to force a wrist pin out of, before I realised that the clip was still in place? I could still use it if I used those high temp teflon bushes rather than clips, but I'd rather get it fixed? Cheers, Terry. :)

Thats a cool machine.   8)  8)
I also like the look of the multi position holder, looks expensive all on its own  :o :o
Not that I need it (yet ::)), but could you rebuild a post if necessary? (I can machine stuff but never seen microwelding before, its neat)
Isnt beryllium copper somewhat dangerous, being radio active an all? ( or is it just inhaling vapors when welding/machining?)

thanks crazypj,

If you can find an old post or machine one from bar stock then I can weld it but you would need the pivot Axel to make sure
everything lines up

As far as the beryllium is concerned the only thing that you have to be carfull of is the vapors
Ive spent allot of money on a vapor type extractor that I use when I have to weld beryllium
even aluminum or any type of metels that are welded with the laser give off a vapors so the extractor is money
well spent

let me know if I can help you

The carbs are a zinc alloy.  Aluminum rod works for that?

Zinc?  Asian bikes, no.  Pushrod-era Brit bikes, yes.

Here is another project that I did for a buddy up in South Carolina (Hint Hint)
it is a bracket to hold an Idle adjustment from a ZX12
so that you don't  have to raise the seat and get your long screw driver out
adjust on the fly

This was laser welded useing .020 4043 Aluminum wire

Do you think a front 750 K0 fender could be butt welded using this method? Over the last 2 years I have toyed with taking a later 750 K0-K2 style front fender then dechroming , then chopping off the front and back underneath the stays and then welding cut ends from another fender to recreate a 'double cut version' as used on the Sandcast and early K0's, then rechroming after finishing the welds to a smooth surface. I have measured the the metal thickness and from memory it was about 0.6mm. The Yamiya repros are around  1200USD + import duty + postage!!

Cheers!! AshD

Another (wow) I have to show my boss this Tuesday. $25.00 seems very reasonable for a repair personally I think your going to have more than that after you buy another set if you figure in the shipping, rebuilding, and hoping the parts set is good or even better than your already working with.

I agree, this set was in terrible shape when I got it, the bike was really rough too. They are a whole lot better now except for these crazy holes. Not sure what the advantage is?

I also have this:
Crack in the #1 main jet area on a set of 657As

Jim has done the post repair for me....fantastic. I will say I am a bit biased as I have spent time with him and talk on the phone with him. You cannot meet a better person.....a great, honest guy. ;)
