Plastic ring behind brake pad has a crack - usable?
« on: April 05, 2021, 03:52:57 AM »
I cracked the plastic ring that goes between the brake pad and caliper during a rebuild.  Do you guys think it would cause an issue to use it now?  I can't find just this ring for sale.

Ordered new set anyway just to get the ring  >:(

Wish the aftermarket pads had the red limit line around the pad.

It's not a gasket. It (nylon) is there to reduce sqealing, with moderate effect btw. I see no objection to reuse it. I'd apply some Ate silicon grease, but not much. Buy genuine pads. They are best, asbestos free nowadays and they have the red line. Post a picture of the pads you have now and measure them. Some here may tell you by comparing them to theirs, how much they're worn.

just use small artist brush and paint a stripe on the pad.Use masking tape if you don't have a steady hand.

I'm using Yesrah sintered pads on my CB550F. Far better than OEM pads. They have a beveled lead on the edge of the pads to match with the pads as wear. Giving better contact quicker. Unlike the OEM ones.

I ran my 500 for 10+ years without an anti-squeal ring, with no ill effects. A crack in it will have little to no effect.

No  it wont cause any issues at all. It just keeps the metal break piston and metal backing of the brake pad separated which is a good thing.

Thanks for all the replies.  Answers my main questions.  More I think about it I don't want to toy with anything being broken in the brake system so I will just replace it with the new one or remove it altogether.  Cracked makes me worry that it would or could shift around.  Probably not! But still.

Depending on which pads you buy you don't always get a nylon ring anyway. It's perfectly safe to run without it if you wish.

The last pads I fitted came with the ring. I fitted it then had to remove it as it was causing the brake to bind. No matter how I adjusted it I couldn't to get it to run freely so I pulled it out again and the brake is fine now.

It6's better to be on the safe side. A good desition.
I've had brake paps I've had to skin the paint edge off the metal puck with sand paper to get them moving freely and stop binding.
