Neutral light intermittent
« on: April 07, 2021, 04:14:51 AM »
This is a new one on me, first time out on my gold 69, neutral light comes on in 3rd, 4th, and 5th , then flashes intermittently for a bit, then goes off. Down shifting comes on again. Doesnt come on in 1st or 2nd and works normal for actual neutral. Head scratcher for me!

Try another switch?
The neutral light will lit when the wire from bulb to neutral switch is grounded.

Can be grounded where it should not. A short somewhere..?

Thought about that but it only does it in 3,4,5 and not 1,2.

Similar problem on my 1971 K! 750. I installed a brand new OEM neutral switch. Problem solved

Check the nuetral light contact and cam. On CB550s these are under the counter sprocket cover. The brass contact does wear down eventually after a lot of use.

I had to replace my 550s one at around 140,000kms

This is a 750 and has a totally different neutral (unadjustable) switch

Mine was a bit hit and miss so I took it out and cleaned the spring loaded ball with WD40 (and sprayed up inside the switch). Must have had some crud on the contacts because it came good.
