Yup, I know fluid discussions usually turn into a #$%* show with varying opinions. However, I've got to ask because it's time for service to my clutch cable (it's hard to pull). After a few miles, my hand and wrist are sore.

My 75 CB550K has been sitting and that's probably the culprit. I already have a new Motion Pro cable on hand and need to lube it before I install it. I figured for funzies I would lube the old one and see if it helps the old one at all.

What brand and type of clutch cable. If it has a teflon liner I personally wouldn't bother.

I just use general purpuse grease on either nipple end.

if they're teflon lined then don't use anything as it will ruin them.
if not, then i hang up the cable and let silicone oil from a spray can run through its entire length.

Teflon is almost completely nonreactive: hydrofluoric acid will annoy it but nothing in any cable lube will do anything to it. So feel free to lube teflon lined cables. It may not help, but it won't hurt.
Of course cables advertised as "teflon lined" may be actually lined with something else - or nothing at all.

I generally use motor oil, I usually only notice the clutch is getting stiff on a ride so I pull it out of the lever and dribble some oil down the wire from the dipstick.

Take off the old cable and loop it into an oil change pan filled with kerosene.  Move the inner cable back & forth every so often.  After a couple of hours it should be pretty clean.  Hang the cable to let it dry, then lube with Inox lubricant spray (unlike WD40, it won't dry out).
