CB500 no oil light
« on: April 11, 2021, 07:46:23 PM »
Hi all,

One of the items on my list since buying my bike last spring is to chase down why the oil light never comes on. As I understand it, it should come on with key and turn off once there is oil pressure. I've read that the switch can go faulty and always be on even with pressure, and some owners then just disable. I am not sure if that is the case, but figured i would try to fix.

Looking for advice on best sequence to identify the problem. Is there an obvious place where people who want to disable do this, so I can check that first? Otherwise, assume start at the bulb then move to the switch itself? Is the switch the little unit on top of the pump?

Grab a wiring diagram of your model bike

Check the bu;b is not blown.
Check connections yo the bulb.
Check connectios to oil switch under the front drive sprocket cover

Do those first then we will continue.......

ive come across a couple of stuck ones, ive also found one on a 500 that was wrong type it worked back to front, earthed out under pressure, these are used mostly on cars with electric fuel pumps, crash the car and engine stalls so fuel pump switches off.

Take the sprocket cover off and ground the wire on top of pressure switch on oil pump with key on, if light works switch is duff(only seen 1 in 40 years) if light stays off either bulb is duff, no power to bulb or wiring fault between bulb and switch

I've seen several switches go bad, on the CB350F as well as on the CB500.

Let me clarify, I have replaced ones that leak but only had one that failed electrically
